They were born in Preston, Connecticut. Jonathan was born 22 Sep, 1806, married 17 Mar, 1833, died 19 Feb, 1873. He was a Veteran of the War of 1812. His father, William Smith, was also a Veteran of the War of 1812. William was born in 1782, Preston, CT, died 1854, in Grand, PA. William's father was Johathan Smith, a Revolutionary War soldier. My notes tell me he was buried on the old Smith farm. (That may be in East Mecca, Ohio.) If anyone has more information on William and Jonathan Smith, please contact me. William's wife was Betsey Wilbur, born 2 Feb, 1783, died 30 Apr, 1843, in Mecca Ohio. I have her family history. Contact me if you want it. Anna Palmer Brown was born 9 July, 1806, Griswold, Connecticut, died 21 Apr, 1869, East Mecca, Ohio. One of Anna's and Johathan's children was Maria Brown Smith, born 30 June, 1839, Mecca, Ohio, died 30 Jan, 1909, Cortland, Ohio, buried in Mecca. If you know the names of Maria's brothers and sisters, please contact me. Also, please contact me if you know the names of Maria's & Rufus Shaw's children. One child of Maria and Rufus was Johnnie Warren Shaw, born 2 Feb, 1865, Mecca, Ohio, married 1 Sep, 1885, died June, 1918, Cortland, Ohio. Johnnie married Nettie Louis Beach, 1 Sep, 1885. Nettie was born 6 Mar, 1865, died 6 April, 1921. She may be buried in Ridge Cemetery with her mother and father. Her parents were Albert Beach and Almira Aldrich, born 29 Sep, 1842, died Nov 3, 1891. A family mystery has been this: Why was Nettie raised by the Sigler family (Cortland)? Her father was in the Civil War, but there was no record of a death. Her mother was living, but there was no mention of her being with the Siglers. I have Nettie's diary during the two years previous to her marriage, and she never mentioned why the Siglers took her in. If anyone knows this story, please contact me. Johnnie and Nettie lived in the home that is still standing (as of Jan, 2001) on Route 42, between Cortland and Mecca. Built in 1826, it is on 25 acres of land and lies on the west side of the highway--runs down to the lake. I'm told the huge barn collapsed last year. Children of Johnnie and Nettie Shaw were Mabel Louise, Almira Marie, and Mildred Louise. I have their birthdates and childrens names/birthdates. If anyone needs to know, contact me. Carole
