He was born during Jefferson's' administration, October 23, 1801, in Huntingdon County, Pa. He came to Ohio in 1828 and finally settled in Warren in1830. He studied law under Judge Fuller and J. M. Edwards, and was admitted to the Bar in 1842. Very little of his life has been devoted to the exclusive practice of his profession, and during much of his time he has been actively engaged in other business. From 1830-1839 he edited the Warren News Letter, which he removed from Cleveland because the latter place was too near Warren ever to amount to anything. From1842-1845 he was Postmaster at Warren. From 1840-1876 he was engaged in the banking business. He was also Mayor of the city for several terms. In 1845 he became an active member and ardent admirer of the fraternity of Odd Fellows, and during his membership he has been honored with some of the highest positions in the Order. From 1852-1853 he served as Grand Patriarch; from 1855-1856 he was Grand Master, and for a series of years was Grand Representative to the Sovereign Grand Lodge of the World. He is also a prominent member of the Masonic Order. He has been married three times. He has four children-Thomas McLain at present the U.S. Counsul at Nassau; Mrs. H. G. Stratton, a piano teacher at Northfield, Mass; Frank J. McLain, a journalist in Philadelphia, and Miss Hattie McLlain a soloist in Re. Edward Everett Hale's Church, Boston, Mass. The General is very tall, of commanding appearance. He lives in a fine old house on Mahoning Ave, in this city. (Includes picture)
