D. and Florinda Watkins and Rolandus P. Hirst Dear Friends Yours of the 14th and 17th. ult. was received on the l0th inst, which was a matter of joy to us, particularly Mother, who had become very anxious for western news, You inform us us that "the said 80 is entered" but you don't say whether you or some other person is the pirchaser, tell us when you write again. We have been making arrangements to move on the lst of April next. down to a small warehouse on the"-cross-cut canal", near the mouth of Yellow-creek, with a view of leaving for the "West" about the 20th. of May next. Mr. Adams says he forwarded your Harbinger with the proper directions to you, cannot account for miscarriage , he says he will write to the editor to direct them in the future to Platteville. In regard to political news, if you have not yet been informed of the results last fall, they were of the most cheering kind. Bebbis Governor of Ohio by about 2400 majority, In Pennsylvania the test vote was for canal commissoner , the Whigs succeeded by about 8300. New York is also Whig by 10,000 majority. Although late to convey such news it is a pleasant task when time and space admits of it. Ebenezer Byers bought the mare for fifty dols. Thomas Swartswelter the buggy for forty dollars, the sheep were sold to three different persons for about 8octs. per head. Our Vendue notes are not due until the 14th. May. I wish you among hands (Rolandus more particularly) to look out a house for us to go into whe we get there which will be some time in the forepart of June. Look a bout and ascertain where a cow can be purchased to the best advantage,& Also if you can, prepare something for us to live on get teams enough to take the rest of our things all at once. Now for the weather. On your cold day in the West, viz. the 7th of Jany, it was stormy here and snowed some but was not so cold as the next day. We have not had a single day of good sleighing here this winter yet. To tell exactly how many degrees below zero the mercury has stood in the thermometer I cannot, but it has been cold enough to freeze the comb of our old rooster close down to his head. The weather has been very changeable form severe cold to moderate, not remaining in one state more than about threee days at a time, the ground is now bare and it is raining with the wind from the South. Shenango was never known to be as high by the " The Old6st Inhabitant" as it was on Saturday, the 2nd. of Jany. last. Uncle Giles mill dam was entirely swept away. Mahoning was also very high, both canals were injured considerably, the great reservoir on the Rrie extension line gave way and was drained to the bottom. I have see nothing of Rob or Amos since my last, but must soon and stir them up, Mother Howard has been some unwell this winter but is now convalescent. She was out to meeting Sunday last. Friends are all well, people healthy generally. "Ma'am"is gone visiting, Jane and all the rest of the children are at school (except Jake) so you perceive now is my time to write. The late arrival of the Steamer Hibernian" at the port of New York brings news of the rise of flour in Europe. Wheat here was advanced from 56 to 70 cents per bushels corn remains at 28. Nothing more of importance. Yours truly, W.D. Hirst Rolandus, if can procure a house try to get some potatoes planted, Say in your next what paper money, if any will go well in your country. Feby. 17/47 Uncle Asa Marriner is to be interred today. He died yesterday morning
