Library) Author: Unknown Joseph Barr By occupation a coal miner in Tuscarawas Co., O., enlisted May 2, 1864, at Trenton, O., at the age of 34, as a private in Co. F, 161st O. V. I.; he took part in no regular engagements but was in several skirmishes, and received an honorable discharge in September, 1864, at Columbus, O. He had three brothers in the army, John in 170th O.V.I., William in 6th O. Bat., was taken prisoner, and Thomas in 98th O.V.I. His wife also had three brothers in the war, Benjamin in 51st O.V.I., was killed at the battle of Stone River; William Fry in same Regt., was taken prisoner and held in Andersonville; and David in same Regt., died of disease contracted while in the army; also one half-brother, Samuel Null, in an Ohio Regt., is now deceased. Comrade Barr was born March 1, 1830, in Tuscarawas Co., O., and was the son of Thomas and Emily (Fencer) Barr, parents both deceased. He was married Sept. 6, 1852, in New Philadelphia, O., to Susan E. Fry, born in Tuscarawas Co.. O., July 22, 1835. the daughter of Samuel Fry, born Jan. 1, 1794. died April 6. 1860, and Christian (Rank), born Feb. 2, 1799, died Aug. 28, 1863. The following children have been born to them: Julia, b. July 15, 1853, died Aug. 17, 1853: Lydia M., b. Feb. 1, 1854, d. July 8, 1873; Martha H., b. Feb. 8,1856; Benjamin F., b. Nov. 8, 1857: Anna, b. Jan. 9, 1859; Mary A., b. Feb. 9,1861; Laura A., b. Dec. 25, 1865, and Maud, born July 17, 1870. Comrade Barr and his family are members of the M. E. church in which he is director and steward; is a councilman of the village where he now lives, draws a pension, is a barber, and his post-office address is Tuscarawas, O. Later He was also a member of the Andrew Crawford Post No. 6 Grand Army of the Republic. His Parents Thomas and Emily (Fincer)Barr Were married 19 Jan. 1826 in Cadiz, Harrison Co.
