Davis Has Cast a Gloom Over Mechanicsburg Mr. and Mrs. John E. Davis, of Mechanicsburg, were terribly injured Wednesday evening in an accident at the Main street crossing of the Big Four railroad in that village. The legs of both Mr. and Mrs. Davis were so badly mangled that amputation was necessary. The couple were driving across the tracks in a buggy which had a storm front. They thus failed to see a freight train that was backing into a switch so that the evening south bound passenger train could get by. The buggy was smashed into pieces, but the horse was not hurt. The Big Four hospital train, with physicians and nurses, hurried out from Springfield and rendered all possible aid, and, it is thought that one or both of this aged couple may survive, though their years and the seriousness of their injuries are against them getting well. +++ William Wright, of Mechanicsburg, was a visitor in Marysville Thursday and was standing near when the Big Four freight crashed into the rig in which Mr. and Mrs. John E. Davis were riding. Wednesday afternoon, both victims losing their lives. The buggy was struck by a slow-moving cut of cars, which slid it along until a “frog” was struck, turning the rig over and hurling both occupants directly across the rails. Mrs. Davis died at 6:30 and her husband two hours later. The funeral of Mr. and Mrs. Davis will be held in the M. E. church of Mechanicsburg, at 1:30 Saturday, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Cutless, and assisted by Rev. Stroup of the M. P. church. Mr. and Mrs. Davis were prominent citizens of Mechanicsburg, and their shocking death has caused much sorrow among their many friends and neighbors. Mr. Davis was sixty-six years of age, was a veteran of the Civil war, being a member of Company K, 113th O. V. I. He was a prominent member of the G. A. R. and also high up in Masonry. Mrs. Davis was sixty-three years of age and was identified with the W. R. C. and Eastern Star. All of the lodges will be represented at the funeral. One daughter survives, Mrs. John T. Brown, who, with her husband, resides on the Davis farm three miles east of Mechanicsburg. Mr. Brown is a state lecturer at farmers’ institutes and was in another part of the state at the time of the accident. Mrs. Brown was completely prostrated by the news of the accident, her parents having spent the afternoon with her, and were on their way home when hit by the train.
