Robertson Who Came to Ohio from Virginia in 1836 and Settled in Jackson Township When that Region was a Dense Wilderness. One of the oldest, best known and most highly respected residents of Jackson township and northern Union county was Granville S. Robertson, who passed away Sunday morning at seven o’clock. He suffered a stroke of apoplexy Thursday and the end soon came. He was born May 19, 1826 in Goochland county, Virginia, coming to Ohio with his parents, Joseph R. and Nancy Robertson, in 1836. They settled in Ross county, near Chillicothe. The trip to Ohio was made in the old fashioned way, overland, in one-horse carts. The roads were merely Indian or deer paths through the woods. His mother died in 1842. His father, who was a crippled soldier of the war of 1812, died 1844. Mr. Robertson then came to Union county and took up his residence in Jackson township, which has been his home ever since. It was but a few years after the Indians had left and when Jackson township was a dense wilderness. Mr. Robertson was said to be the right man in the right place and he saw northern Union county changed from a wilderness to one of the most productive farming districts in Ohio. He was past eighty-six years old and was always a farmer. He was proud of the part he took in helping to develop this section. He served two months as a private soldier in the Civil War, afterward volunteering as a sharpshooter. He hired a substitute afterward, paying him $200 in money and signing over his bounty to him, amounting to almost $500 altogether. His substitute’s name was Benjamin Messer. He lived near Newton, now Raymond. When the general of the state ordered the organization of the militia he enlisted in Co. D, First Regt., in Union county and was elected second lieutenant. He served in that capacity during the organization but was never called into actual service. John Hartshorn was the colonel of the regiment and A.V. Bill was government drillmaster. Mr. Robertson was twice married. In 1850 he was married to Louisa J. Andrews and to their union one son, William, was born. He died in infancy. His wife died in 1853 and in March 1855, he married Elizabeth J. Bell. To this union twelve children were born, eight boys and four girls. Five boys and one girl are now living. They are Mrs. Sherman Watkins, Joseph, Isaac, Jesse, Samuel and Robert and the deceased lived with the last named son. Mrs. Robertson died in April 1900. He leaves one sister, Mrs. America Newman, of Ross county. The aged man had twenty-four grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Religiously he was a Baptist and was a member of the Union Baptist church at Arbela for over forty years. For many years he filled the position of local preacher, but would never accept donations or things of value for services. He always held up to the people the idea of giving to those who were needy than he. Politically Mr. Robertson was a Democrat in state and national elections and he cast his first vote for James K. Polk. He filled nearly every office in the township in which he lived and he appreciated the honors bestowed upon him by the people of the community where he lived so long, irrespective of party, race or color. He owned his farm of one hundred acres, just west of Price cemetery, in Jackson township, where his many friends were always made welcome. It can be truthfully be said of him, “he was a grand old man.” Funeral services were held from the Essex M.P. church Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock, Rev. J.A. Sutton, of LaRue officiating. The remains were laid to rest in Price cemetery, west of Essex.
