He was the third child of Henry and Susanna Rittenhouse. In early life he removed to Louisa Co. Virginia, where he remained several years, after which he removed to Albermarle Co., same State, where he lived till about the year 1816, when he with his family removed to Ross county, Ohio. There he lived until 1854, when he came to Union county, where he resided till the day of his death. While living in Albermarle county, Va. he was married twice; the first time with Catharine Thurman, who lived but a short time. The record of the date of this marriage has been lost, as well as the dates of the death of his wife. In the year 1800 he married the second time to Judith Thomas. The issue of this marriage were eleven children, six daughters, all of whom are now dead, and five sons, all of whom are yet living. In the year 1814, he enlisted in the service of his country, and was in active service, four months and ten days, when owing to a partial failure of health he was furloughed and returned under the charge of a home surgeon a few weeks until, the war closed. He died the 29th of January, 1873, in Dover township, Union County, at the residence of his son, Thomas Rittenhouse; so that it will be seen he was in his ninety-ninth year, being born Oct. 20th, 1774, and passing away the 29th of January, 1873, as before stated.
