William Stubbs aged 73 years died Thursday at midnight at his home on the Raymond pike after a long illness with cancer of the liver. He suffered greatly but the end was peaceful. William Stubbs was born May 1, 1845, his age being 72 years, 1 month and six days. He was born in Belmont county, and was a son of John and Mary Stubbs, both of whom passed away several years ago. He was married to Mary E. Jarvis, November 1, 1873, who with eight children are left to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father. The children are Mrs. Ai [sic] Poling, Chas. N. Stubbs, Hollis D. Stubbs, Mrs. Otta Poling, Mrs. Dyer Reeder, Mrs. Alvin Miller and Mrs. Clyde Hudson and Carrol Stubbs, all in Union county. He leaves the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Benjamin Travis, Mrs. Lewis Fitzgerald, and Allen Stubbs, of Barnsville: James Stubbs and Joseph Stubbs, of Wilbur, West Virginia, and Mrs. William Stidd, of Sistersville, West Virginia. Mr. Stubbs had been a great sufferer for a year with cancer of the liver and dropsy. He was a veteran of the Civil war in the 52nd regiment, O. V. I., Company C. He served as color bearer and had the flag staff shot off twice above his hand. He was also with Sherman on his march to the hea [sic]. He had been a member of the Church of Christ, union Chapel, many years. The funeral will be held at the house at 2:30 Sunday afternoon. Rev. W. W. Gibbens, of West Mansfield, will officiate and the interment will be at Oakdale in charge of the H. W. Morey company.
