Mr. Smith was born at Frederick, Va., February 23d, 1818, and with his family moved to Xenia, Ohio, in 1826. Subsequently, Mr. Smith came to Clark county, and in 1850 moved to Otter Run, in Union county, where he resided till 1872, when he became a citizen of Marysville. He leaves a wife, six children and a number of grandchildren. In 1862 he enlisted in Co. K., O. V. I., and served in the army till he was discharged for disability in 1863. He was a good soldier and a patriot without guile. He was a member of Ransom Reed Post, and also held membership in the Masonic fraternity, the two orders furnishing the pall-bearers at the funeral. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, Rev. W. M. Haines officiating upon the occasion. His remains were laid to rest in Oakdale. Mr. Smith, while residing at Otter Run, for a period of twenty-two years, followed the trade of carpenter, and made the erection of large barns a specialty, many of which may be found still standing monuments of his ingenuity.
