J. Whitney, the most prominent and wealthy citizen of Union county died suddenly Wednesday morning of apoplexy, Mr. Whitney was born in Susquehanna county, Pennsylvania, November 23, 1829, and came to Marysville in 1859 and engaged in the dry goods business until 1876, when he organized the People's Bank, and became president, a position he held until the time of his death. Mr. Whitney was considerably interested in stock, and was the first man in Union county to import Jersey cows here. Mr. Whitney was twice married, the first time to Miss Ruby Tuttle, a native of Pennsylvania, in Feb., 1858. She died in 1870, leaving two children. He was again married, to Miss Kate Peck of Milford, Conn., and three children were born to their union, only one of whom, with the mother, survives him. Mr. Whitney owns several business houses and real estate properties besides valuable farm lands. His funeral will occur Friday morning at 9 o'clock at his late residence on Sixth street, Rev. David Bowers officiating, and the remains will be interred in Oakdale cemetery.
