V. I.; in the eighteenth year of his age. The hour in which he fell was the last sad hour form many brave soldiers of the Republic, for many, too, of her enemies, but not one braver, not one more gallant fell, than our brave comrade, who having so lately enlisted in his country’s service, now poured out his young life for her freedom and her fame. Not did that on fall on that battlefield, more beloved by his comrades nor who more deserved their love. Our comrade was not a member of the church (we use the term not disrespectfully) but why should this be a certain source of lasting sorrow to us whom he has left? Who shall shorten the arm of the Almighty; or say unto God, what passes between the parting soul and its God in that trying hour of dissolution, or say what is the all-sufficient sacrifice offered up in the article of death? We do know his mercy endureth forever. We do know that ours is a long suffering God and where is the fitter spot for the mortal to put on immortality than the battlefield; on which he gives his life to that to which – next to his God belongs—his country? Who more deserves glorious eternity than “The brave who sinks to rest, By all his country’s wishes blest? Who dies a martyr to Freedom and to right, A Sacrifice of treason and of wrong?” Such are our hopes for our beloved comrade. His body sleeps in its last sleep upon the hands of the majestic Potomac. May God rest his soul among his chosen jewels!
