Webster was born September 13th, 1817, in Delaware county, Ohio, and died at his home near Pharisburg, March 1st, 1898, aged 80 years, 5 months and 18 days. He moved to Union county, near Irwin, in the year 1821, where he learned the carpenter trade with Gen. William B. Irwin, well known by the earlier residents of the county. He moved to Leesburg township about 25 years ago. The deceased was married to Miss Mercy Dee, on October 8th, 1841, with whom he lived happily more than 50 years, having celebrated their golden wedding in 1891. to them were born eight children, three sons and five daughters. One son, the eldest born, answered his country’s call in the hour of need and have his young life a sacrifice to liberty and right. The remaining children are all living and were present at their father’s funeral, except one daughter, who lived in Kansas, and could not be present. On the 12th of April, 1892, the companionship of more than half a century was broken, and the wife and mother passed to the higher life. Father Webster was a man in the true sense of the word. His honesty and strict integrity have builded [sic] him a memorial in the hearts of those who knew him. Quietly and unostentatiously his life has been lived, and other lives have been strengthened by its influence. When valor and patriotism were demanded, he pledged all that was sacred and dear, and in response to his country’s call enlisted in Co. B, 321 O. V. I., serving nearly two years, and being discharged at the end of that time for disability. He was a member of the Universalist church, and zealous, earnest supporter of its doctrines and teachings. He found joy and peace in its precious and priceless pledges of God’s infinite, unlimited and impartial goodness and mercy and love, and through this faith, death was robbed of its sting, and for him the grave has no victory.
