He was 70 years old . He was a trustee of Elk Township for several years as well as the Infrimary Director of the County for two years and was also president of the Soldiers Relief Commission of the County at the time of his death. He was a soldier of the Union and served over three years, enlisting when he was only 16 years of age in Company E 75th Ohio Volunteers. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, was afterward exchanged and served until the close of the war and mustered out in July 26, 1865. He is survived by his wife, and two sons John L. and Samuel F. Beckley of McArthur and one brother Wallace Beckley of Point Rock and one sister Mrs Wilson Searls of Wellston. Funeral services were held in the M E Church Thursday at 1 o'clock pm conducted by Rev W. E Prior, burial was in the Elk Cemetery. His old comrades of Sergt Reed Post acted as pall bearers and conducted the ritualistic service at the grave. Additional Comments: Herbert's wife was Ella Amanda Salts. They were married September 1897. They had 2 children John L. Beckley and Samuel Francis Beckley. Ella died March 5, 1950.
