D. B. Dye. He was buried in the Hixon Cemetery, Dundas. He was born at Bloom Furnace, Lawrence County, August 17, 1832. His parents were natives of Alsace, Loraine, Germany,and came to Ohio in 1803. He was the first Postmaster at Latrobe Furnace in Jackson county in 1855 and was later a bookkeeper at Keystone Furnace and also manager at Eagle Furnace. He fought in the Civil war and enlisted in Company L 12th Ohio Cavalry on February 26, 1864. He was promoted to Sergeant on July 1, 1865 at Lexington Kentucky. After the close of the war, he returned to Eagle Furnace. In 1868 he married to Ellen Salts,then moved to Bainbridge, Ohio in 1880, where he lived for a few years, then returned to Dundas, where he lived continuously until his death. Mr. Benner for a number of years studied and issued forecasts of financial conditions of the country, the trend of the iron business in which he was engaged for many years being the basis for his forecasts. He published his book of prophecies in the 1880's and with updated supplements from time to time, until 1908 forecasting events and conditions of the Country and predicting the advance or falling off of prices of iron, farm products, etc and the effect produced on business. His book had wide circulation.Bankers and business men in the money centers of the country had a copy on their desks or in their libraries,with frequent comments of the Metropolitan newspapers of a complimentary nature appearing from time to time as his forecasts were issued. Additional Comments: Samuel Benner married Eleanor "Ellen" Salts on May 14, 1868 in Eagle Furnace, Vinton County, Ohio. They had one son Stephen John Benner. Another newspaper article has Samuel's birthplace as Bainbridge, Ross County, Ohio.He operated a woolen mill in Bainbridge as well. He had a large farm in Dundas and it was operated by his son later in life.
