Mr. Dowd spent his whole life in Vinton county. He was born near where Zaleski is located on February 15, 1818 and he was 75 years, 6 months and 16 ( could be 10) days old at the time of his death. He was twice married- the 1st time to Olive Fuller. To this union were born eleven children: eight of whom are now living, viz: Mrs Mary Goff, Francis M. Dowd, Mrs Amanda Hulbert and Mrs Charlotte Timms all of this county, Harvey Dowd of Thompsonville, Michigan, John W. Dowd of Toronto, Canada, and D.V. Dowd of ____ ( the paper had a line) Kansas. Some years after the death of his wife, he married Miss Eliza Shry and to this union were born three children, viz Henry B. Dowd of Osborne County, Kansas, Henry B. Dowd of La Salle, Illinois and Dr. Ralph P. Dowd of Fisher, Illinois. His last wife died some five years ago. In the early history of Vinton county, he was one of its Commissioners and served as such at the time the Court House was built, and later served a tem as Infirmary Director. He was a faithful and efficient public servant, whose judgement was always right and proper. He was an honest, manly man. Such he lived and such he died, making a record worthy of immitation. Mr. Dowd was a faithful member of the M.E. Church and lived the life of a Christian. His funeral was at the M.E. Church at 10 o'clock am standard time. Sermon by Rev. Mackey. John W. Dowd and Dr. R.P, Dowd sons of the dec'd have arrived to attend the funeral and his son , Homer is expected here this (Wednesday) evening."
