Down, son of Alexander C. Down and Harriett Dowd, was born in McArthur, December 25, 1863 and died Friday morning July 23, 1897. When he was about 12 years old, he was a clerk in the store of C.W. Holland, who then was doing a mercantile business in McArthur. He also clerked for the Will Brothers and H.H. Shively. About 10 years ago he went West and had a job with Beline, Moore & Emery of Kansas City. He worked in the linen department, and became so expert that he could tell the quality of linen by mere touch. His health began to fail he quit the store business and began to travel. But instead of being benefitted his health continued to grow worse, and about the first of April he returned to his mother and the home of his boyhood days to die. Shortly after his return he and his mother went to housekeeping in the old home, where every thing that kind friends and the hands of a loving mother could do was done to make his last days as pleasant as possible. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon. A short service was conducted by Elder J.M. Morris of the Christian Church., after which the remains were interred in the Elk Cemetery." Additional Comments: Another obit appeared in the rival newspaper in Vinton County Vinton County Republican July 29, 1897 "DEATH OF OWEN E. DOWD" "Owen E. He returned home last spring, the disease at that time having such a hold on him that there was little hope for his recovery.
