Jehu Rose was born June 6, 1832, in Lawrence County, Ohio and died in Gallipolis, Ohio March 3, 1905, aged seventy-two years, eight months and twenty seven days. His early life was spent on a farm where he worked in the summer and attended the district school in the winter. By industry, economy and self denial, he succeeded in securing the means of furthering his education, and when he had gotten all that the county school had to give, he attended school at Albany, Ohio, and there qualified himself to teach and followed that profession for a number of years, becomming a leading educator. He was married March 20, 1857 to Elizabeth J. Niday, who departed this life February 14, 1884. To this union were born eight children. June 18, 1885, he was united in marriage with Mrs. Harriet Hamilton who survives him. Brother Rose was a soldier in the War of the Rebellion. Enlisting in Company K, 173rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, he served one year. He was present at the Battle of Nashville, one of the hotly contested battles of the war. It was in the service of his country that he contracted the disease with which he suffered ever since, and which caused his death. He was graciously converted to Christ at a campmeeting held at Flag Springs, Gallia County, Ohio in the summer of 1848; joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, and remained a consistent member till his death, having spent fifty-seven years in the service of the Lord. He leaves to mourn their loss, a wife, four brothers, two sisters, seven sons, three daughters, thirty-six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. His funeral services were held at Ohio Chapel, March 6th conducted by Rev. A. J. Hawk, Presiding Elder of Gallipolis District, assisted by Revs. H. B. Lewis, W. H. Tope and the writer W. Smith. (F.R.) He was married to Catherine Carpenter September 17, 1861. (F.R.) To this union was born 8 children, two of whom died in infancy, and Winifred who died in 1894, aged 32 years. Five survive him. He enlisted in the Civil War in 1862. Served three years, returned home in 1865 with an honorable discharge. He was a brave soldier. He again united in marriage to Julia Yates in 1884. To this union was born 12 children, 4 of whom died in infancy. He joined the M.E. church at Etna Furnace in 1883. Since that time he lived in close communion with God. During the last three weeks of his life he spent his time praying and rejoicing, often telling them "all is well; I am saved, don't mourn for me when I'm gone, rejoice, I'm going home." A few hours before death he sang, "Jesus can make a dying bed feel soft as downy pillows are". Father we miss thee, oh we miss thee." She was married to William Eakins, Aug. 23, 1868 in Gallia County, Ohio, the same year they moved to Davis Co., Iowa. They had ten children, of these one died in infancy, baby Charles. W. Rose, aged about eighty years, died this morning at four o'clock at his home in Proctorville. He had been in poor health for some time but was able to be up and about and his condition was not considered critical. Yesterday morning he was at the Post Office where he had been employed for years as rural mail carrier. Although he had not been able to attend to the duties of this office for some time he came to the Post Office to oversee the work of his substitute, and his condition was seemingly no worse. He continued in his usual health up to the hour of retiring last night but succumbed shortly after arising this morning. His death came as a shock and grievous blow to his family and friends. Captain Rose was a Civil War Veteran and was well known and hightly respected throughout this entire section. He was a prominent Mason and a member of the First M. E. Church. He was a regular attendant at all Church services and was an active church worker. He was connected with every movement that had for its aim the uplift and betterment of the community and was a splendid citizen. For a number of years he held the office of Squire. The deceased, was one of a family of twenty-two children two of whom survive. He is also survived by his wife and four children, Two sons Bert and Will rose of Huntington, two daughters, Lillie and Ella who reside at home. The funeral arrangements have not yet been made but will likely be in charge of the Masons. Announcement will be given later of the exact time for the funeral. Additional Comments: PROCTORVILLE Funeral Held On Sunday morning at ten-thirty o'clock the funeral services over the remains of Capt. T. W. Rose who died on Wednesday from heart trouble. The funeral services were conducted by the Masonic Order with Rev. W. H. shafer officiating minister. The services were held in the Methodist church where the deceased had worshipped just two Sundays before. Mr. Rose leaves two sons L. A. and W. R. of Huntington, two daughters Misses Ella and Lily rose at home with the faithful and loving wife. Interment occured in the Rome cemetery. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community. Davis was born in Wales, Dec. 25, 1841, departed this life in Gallia Co., O., March 30, 1914, aged 72yrs., 3mos. and 5 days. He was united in marriage with Catherine Griffith in the year 1872. To this union 5 children were born, 3 sons and 2 daughters. One son has preceeded him, his wife has also crossed over and brother and one sister of the deceased still live, Thos. D. Davis and Anna D. Edwards. The deceased was a veteran of the Civil War being a member of Co. D., 1st Regiment O.H.A. He was also a member of the methodist Episcopal Church. to die a christian death was the great purpose of his life. He so blended graces and good qualities so combined the traits and characteristics which distinguish men to be worthy of Antony's compliments to Brutus: "His life was gentle and the elements so mixed in him that Nature might stand up and say to all the world - this was a man. He found his inspiration at his -------------------" The last portion of the obituary was obliterated. Additional Comments: >From Hardesty's History of Gallia County, 1872: "David D. Davis, an influential citizen of Harrison Township, was born in Wales, December 25, 1848. His parents were John D. and Mary (Richards) Davis. The subject of this sketch was united in the holy bonds of matrimony with Catherine Griffiths, in February, 1872. Mrs. Davis was born in Wales in 1850. Four children have come to bless and brighten their home, in the order given below: Reese, born May 31, 1873; John, August 10, 1875; Daniel, August 11, 1877; and Mary, March 5, 1880. The parents of Mrs. Davis were Rees D. and Mary (Davis) Griffiths. They settled in Gallia County in 1854. Mr. Davis was in the late war, enlisting in Company D., 117th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, August 15, 1862, serving with that command about one year, when he was transferred to the 1st Ohio Heavy Artillery, and served until the close of the war. He is a farmer by profession, with postoffice address at Patriot Postoffice, Ohio". Davis. To this union were born five children. She left behind her husband, one sister Rachel Phillips of Columbus, Ohio and one brother, Daniel D. Griffith of Cora to mourn her loss. One sister, Mrs. B.L. Jones and brother John Griffith preceeding her to the great beyond. "She was a most estimable lady, faithful, industrious wife and a loving mother." "She joined the Baptist church in early life and lived a faithful consistent christian." "She was a loving mother and companion and heaven and heavenly things were the subject of her conversation in her late illness. She will be greatly missed, she gave herself for her devoted family, but we must have abiding faith in God. Remembering that 'Jesus says, What I do now ye know not, but ye shall know hereafter'". "By an act of faith let us life our tearful eyes to yonder city beyond death's sea, and see her among those who have washed their robes in the blood of the lamb with their toils and cares forever over and" The last sentence is obliterated except for the word "immortality".
