She had been about her household duties apparently as well as usual. An early dinner had been prepared and she had seated herself in a chair at the front window, presumably to await the coming of her husband. When Mr. Sanzenbacher entered the room he spoke, but receiving no response he approached her and to his horror found that she was dead. Her death was due to heart trouble from which she had been a sufferer. Mrs. Sanzenbacher was born in Canfield township Nov. 25, 1832, and was therefore nearly 70 (sic 66) years of age. Her entire life was spent in Canfield, where she was universally beloved and respected. She was married to John Sanzenbacher Dec. 24, 1850. The result of this union was six - Mrs. John E. Neff, Mrs. I. Callahan, Charles, David and Luther Sanzenbacher of Canfield and John Sanzenbacher of Girard. Funeral services, held from the family residence Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock, were conducted by Rev. J. E. Cope, pastor of the M.E. Church, of which the deceased had long been a member. The remains were placed in the family vault in the village cemetery. Theobald Canfield, Nov. 5. - This village was excited and shocked this forenoon to learn of the very sudden and unexpected death of Mrs. John Sanzenbacher, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of this place. Mrs. Sanzenbacher, who was perhaps 70 years of age, was found dead in a chair in her room at about 10:45 o’clock this forenoon. It is supposed that the cause of this death was heart failure. Mr. Sanzenbacher, the bereaved husband,, is one of the wealthiest men in the county. At one time he was rated to be worth $100,000, but it is likely that his fortune is less than that now. He was for years engaged in the tanning business. He owns bank stock, a couple of farms and has village property. He was the head of the tanning concern, which was a corporation. Mrs. Sanzenbacher, whose maiden name was Oswald, was a sister of the first wife of the late D. Theobald, of this city. Besides her husband, four children are left to mourn the death of a devoted, tender mother. Three of them are David, John and Charles Sanzenbacher. Mrs. Sanzenbacher had a large acquaintance and was very well known in Youngstown. She was an amiable woman and a member of the German Reformed church. So far no arrangements have been made for the funeral. Additional Comments: Corrections to this article: She was 66 years old when she died. Also, she had six children and one of them was Mrs. John E. Neff (Harriett/Hattie) who is not mentioned here. Others omitted are Mrs. Irvin Callahan (Rebecca/Beccie) and Luther. Another discrepancy is the name of her church. She was a Methodist church member. While he had been quite feeble for some time it was not until last Saturday that he took to his bed. His condition grew rapidly worse until the end came. Mr. Sanzenbacher was born in the kingdom of Wurtemberg, Germany, May 5, 1827, consequently was nearly 92 years of age. In 1833 he emigrated to the united States with his parents, spending his boyhood near Unity, Columbiana county, and in Lawrence county, Pa. In 1844 he was bound out to learn the trade of tanning and currying. Early in 1850 he purchased a small tannery in Canfield, commencing business with a capital of $500. Later he had as partners in business Fred Krehl of Girard and Pierpont Edwards. For years he was at the head of the J. Sanzenbacher & Co. tannery, one of the largest manufacturers of leather in the state. He was a keen business man and very successful. He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Sarah Oswald whom he married Dec. 4, 1850. Six children were born to them, four of whom are living – Mrs. J.E. Neff, Mrs. I. Callahan, Charles and Luther Sanzenbacher, all of Canfield. His second wife died only a few months ago. Funeral services will be held from family home Friday afternoon at 2:30, fast time, in charge of Rev. R.S. Smith, pastor of the M.E. Church, of which the deceased was a member. The remains will be placed in the Sanzenbacher family vault in the village cemetery. He is a progressive, public-spirited citizen. Mr. Sanzenbacher was born in the Kingdom of Wurtemberg, Germany, May 5, 1827, and is, therefore, a little more than 75 years of age (sic should be 92 years of age). He emigrated to the United States with his parents in 1833 and lived near Unity, Columbiana county, until 1836, when the family removed to Lawrence county, Pa. His boyhood days were spent on a farm until 1844 when he was bound out to R. Fullerton for three and a half years to learn the trade of tannin and currying. After serving his apprenticeship he came to Mahoning county and worked in what were then considered large tanneries. On April 9, 1850, he came to Canfield to take charge of a tannery he purchased of F. A. Brainerd. Dec. 24, 1850, he was married to Miss Sarah Oswald of Canfield township. Six children were born to them. Mrs. Sanzenbacher died a few years since. During the war Mr. Sanzenbacher was associated with the late Pierpont Edwards in the grocery and drug trade and with F. Krehl of Girard in the tanning business. In 1867 he sold out these interests and purchased a fine farm one mile east of the village. But a couple of years later he again engaged in tanning wand with P. Edwards as a partner engaged extensively in the manufacture of leather belting. A mammoth building was erected near the railroad and for years a large force of workmen were employed. Additional Comments: Photo was inserted into this text.
