Martha Ellen Barnhart, 70, of Bainbridge died at 7:56 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001 at the Greenfield Area Medical Center. She was born June 3, 1931 in Ross County, the daughter of Harold D. Hester and Nora (Spurgeon) Hester. She is survived by her husband, Donald 'Jake' Barnhart, whom she married on Nov. 10, 1951; one daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Lloyd Clouser, of Bainbridge; three sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Sharmin Barnhart, of Bainbridge, Rodger and Marsha Barnhart, of Chillicothe, and Jeff and Lori Barnhart, of Bainbridge; 11 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, seven sisters and four brothers. She was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother and both parents. She was a homemaker and was a graduate of Buckskin High School. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2001 at the Murray-Fettro Funeral Home in Greenfield, where the Rev. Paul Goshorn will officiate. Burial will be in the South Salem Cemetery. " Caroline Cokonougher Shoemaker, dau. of Christopher and Elizabeth Cokonougher was born in VA on Dec. 18, 1825 & departed this life June 19, 1919. She came to this part of the country with her parents when she was 9 yrs. of age & spent her life in this moderate neighborhood. She was a member of the Brethern Church at Straight Creek. She leaves to mourn her loss: 2 dau Margaret Freeze of Clermont Co. & Lucinda Evans of Peebles, OH. She has 16 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren to mourn her loss. She was buried in the Locust Grove Cemetery on the 21st day of June." Additional Comments: Transcription of a 1988 letter : "1988 Fri Eve Peebles, Ohio Dear Cousin, Am Sorry that I neglected writing you. But I don't have Lucille Williams address yet. But she is Bessie Chenowit' daughter. and David Freeze is her grandfather. Bessies dad. But Caroline lived & died in their home. Lucille said she could remember when they came out of the Bedroom & told them she was dead. She didn't go to funeral But stayed with Grandma Freeze at house. I have spent weekend with them a lot. They didn't have any convenience But not many of us did have at that time. Was glad to get the death certificate of Caroline. Will have to tell my cousin the cemetery - caretaker we have record to show she was Buried a Locust Grove Cemetery. Mom always went to the top of the hill with her little Bunch of flowers is why we knew where it was at." It was given to Zelma by her cousin, Lucille Williamson. Lucille's mother Bessie (Freeze) Chenoweth is the one that put together some sort of family history. "Caroline Cokonougher born in VA. Her parents - Chris Jr. & Elizabeth/Betsy Dodds. Caroline's dau - Margaret Annvalee Lewis/Cokonougher married Sampson Freeze. Sampson & Margaret had 16 ch. Their 3rd. ch was David Sampson Freeze. He was father of Bessie (Freeze) Chenoweth. Bessie had dau. Lucille Williamson. Sampson & Margarets 16th ch. was Ona Ethel Freeze who m. Russel W. Swayne. Zelma's pars. were Ona & Russell." "Christopher Cokonougher & Elizabeth Goods was married the 14 day of June 1821. Christopher was born Mar 11, 1797. Children - James Cokonougher Born May 30, 1822. Zacarah Cokonougher Born June 16, 1823. Atteson Cokonougher Born June 28, 1824. Caroline Cokonougher Born December 18, 1825 (Zelma's, my Great Grand Mother. Died June 19, 1919.) Ruhamay Cokonougher Born Feb. 22, 1827. This is from Freeze Reunion Book. Evan Evans 1854 - 1908 Lucinda 'Cindy' 26 Nov. 1852 - 1932 (Husband & wife) Caroline Cokonougher was daughter of Christopher Cokonougher. He was the son of Christopher Cokonougher. Must be Sr. & Jr. the best I make of it. He married Mary Maglean Longnecker. His Brothers were Joseph & Jacob Cokonougher. Margaret Annvalee Lewis Born Sept 6, 1846. Cindy Frost Born Nov. 26, 1852. Dolla Smith Cokonougher, 79, 340 Mirabeau st., Greenfield, died 3 p.m. Wednesday at Holmes Hospital, Cincinnati. She had been ill three months. Born July 14, 1897, in Mason County, W. Va., she was the daughter of Frank and Lucinda Davis Smith. Her husband, Harvey J. Cokonougher, died May 18, 1968. Surviving are two sons, Jay, Greenfield, and Herman, Frankfort; four daughters, Mrs. Robert (Eva) Lyle, Hamilton; Mrs. Robert (Ethel) Haines, East Monroe; Mrs. William (Genevieve) Van Allen, Columbus, and Mrs. Forest (Isabel) Post, Greenfield; 22 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Henry Smith, South Salem, and Arthur Smith, Lyndon Rt. 1, and a sister, Mrs. Bryan (Ollie) Wisecup, Lyndon Rt. 1. She was born May 4, 1920 in Ross County, Ohio, to Joseph and Alice Virginia Storts Nevin. Mrs. Cokonougher was a 1938 graduate of Bainbridge High School, a homemaker and a member of the East Monroe United Methodist Church for 45 years. She taught Sunday School for 25 years. Mrs. Cokonougher was preceded in death by her husband, Jay A. Cokonougher, on March 19, 1996; sons James J. on Dec. 12, 1988, John on Aug. 9, 1987 and Ronald on Sept. 16, 1944; grandson Tyler Orner on July 17, 1974; brothers Edward (Hap) Nevin and Everett (Fritz) Nevin; and by sisters Marjorie Chambliss and Louise Riley. She is survived by son Larry D. (Jo) Cokonougher of Greenfield; daughters Carol A. Forrest Milton (Butch) Cokonougher, 74, of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., passed away June 19, 2000, in Ft. Walton Beach. He was born April 15, 1926, in Ross County, Ohio, to the late William S. and Emma Forsythe Cokonougher. On March 11, 1957, he married the former Ruth A. Overly, who survives. Also surviving are sons, David (Peggy) Cokonougher, Greenfield, Ohio, Randy (Susan) Overly, Crestview, Fla., Terry (Martha) Cokonougher, Elberta, Ala., Brian (Tami) Cokonougher, Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; daughter, Nancy Harewood, Greenfield, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Donald Hess, Clarksburg, Ohio. He was predeceased by one sister, Ethel Brookover, South Salem, Ohio; and two brothers, Harry Cokonougher, Athens, Ohio, and Wayne Cokonougher, Battle Creek, Mich. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and was employed in 1952 by the Chillicothe Federal Reformatory, and transferred after its closure to the Eglin Federal Prison Facility at Ft. Walton Beach, where he retired in 1980 after 28 years of service. In 1981, he was employed by a Government contractor as a security officer in military test facilities, from which he retired in 1999. GREENFIELD - Mrs. Hannah Mazie Cokonougher, 88, of 647 McKell Ave., Greenfield, died at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Margaret Clark-Oakfield Convalescent Center, Washington Court House. Service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Murray Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Heininger officiating. Burial will follow in South Salem Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Cokonougher was born Dec. 10, 1883, in Ross County to John and Mary Thomas Hurless. She was married to Adiston E. Cokonougher, who died May 31, 1933. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. John (Hazel) Hollar, Route 1, Lyndon, Mrs. Mark (Helen) Smith, Greenfield, Mrs. Stanley (Audria) Fordyce, Brookville, Fla., and Mrs. Kenneth (Evelyn) Staats, Greenfield; one son, Harold E., South Dennis, Mass.; 23 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; six great- great-grandchildren; one brother, Orville Hurless, Lattaville; and two sisters. Mrs. Margaret Forsythe, Greenfield, and Mrs. Martha Shoemaker, Bournville. She was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters. Mrs. Cokonougher was a member of the Greenfield First United Church." Cokonougher, 77, of 18 1/2 Mulligan rd, Athens, died May 22 at O'Bleness Hospital after a long illness. He was born in Paulding County, a son of the late William and Catherine Rayburn Cokonougher, and formerly lived in Greenfield. He and his wife owned and operated the Paramount Photo Studio in Athens for 15 years prior to retirement due to ill health. He is survived by his wife, Lillian Crusie Cokonougher; two daughters, Mrs. Edward (Betty) Mizicko of Athens and Mrs. Fred (Esther) Reif of Apollo Beach, Fla.; one sister, Mrs. Allen (Ethel) Brookover, Lyndon; one half sister, Mrs. Don (Phyllis) Hess, Clarksburg; one half brother, Forest Cokonougher, Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Service was held Saturday, May 24, at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Dahl officiating. Burial followed in Athens Memory Gardens." Cokonougher, 71, Frankfort Rt. 2, a retired farmer, died in his residence at 3:45 pm, Saturday. Born in Paulding county, Ohio June 23, 1896, he was a son of Zachary and Mary Frost Cokonougher. He was married on Feb. 14, 1917 to Dolla Smith, who survives. He also leaves two sons and four daughters: Jay and Herman Cokonougher, of Greenfield, Mrs. Robert (Eva) Lyle, of Oxford, O., Mrs. Dean (Ethel) Haines, of Leesburg, Mrs. William (Genevieve) Van Allen, of Columbus, and Mrs. Forrest (Isabel) Post, of Greenfield; 24 grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. John (Anna) Schmidt, of South Salem. He was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Jane, and five sisters and a brother. He was a member of the United Methodist church. Service will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, in the Murray funeral home. Burial will be made in South Salem cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home. Additional Comments: This obituary has the wrong name for Harvey's mother. Her maiden name was Wisecup, not Frost. The grandparents of Harvey Cokonougher were Adtson and Elizabeth (Shoemaker) Cokonougher, and Joseph and Phoebe (Frost) Wisecup.
