[VA Hospital] A retired truck driver, he was born Aug. 14, 1926, in Paintsville, KY, a son of the late Levi and [Nancy]Evaline Williams Blair. He was a World War II army veteran and a member of the United Baptist faith. Surviving are his wife, Muriel Jean Whaley Blair, whom he married Sept. 20, 1945; three sons, Roger and Dayle Blair, both of Westland, Mich., and William Blair, at home; five daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Carol) Kish of Rockwood, Mich., Nancy Blair of Toledo, Janet Sayre and Mrs. David (Gayle) Jones, both of Clarksburg, and Betty Dickson of Westland, Mich.; two brothers, Henry Blair of Carroll, Ohio, and Curtis Blair of Kingston; two sisters, Lucy Jones of VanLear, Ky., and Mrs. Weldon (Mazel) Davis of Carroll; 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Phillis Blair; two brothers, Thomas and Bazil, and two sisters, Shella Sohn and Hazel Blair. The Clark County sheriff's office said George M. Whaley, 49, of Rt. 1, Springfield, died of wounds suffered when his step-son James L. Brown, 20, reportedly shot him in the stomach with a .410 gauge shotgun during an argument at the Whaley residence on Cold Springs Rd. Brown is being held in Clark County jail at Springfield, under $5,000 bond on a charge of assult with a deadly weapon filed shortly after the shooting. Officers said additional charges are expected to be filed at an arraignment set for Jan 5. Surviving are Whaley's widow, Mrs. Lula Brown Whaley; a step-daughter, Mrs. Joyce Kemper of Huntington, W. Va.; a step-son Daniel Brown at home; and six sisters, Mrs. Louise Newton and Mrs. Cora Pettit, both of Waverly, Mrs. Ina Sager and Mrs. Sarah Sager, both of Amlin, Mrs. Mary Askins of Swanton and Mrs. Muriel Blair of Monclova. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Jackson-Littleton Funeral Home in Springfield with buriel in the Omega Cemetery. Additional Comments: This wasn't an actual obituary, it was a news story because of the cause of death. George was born on Aug. 4, 1918 in Pike County and I believe that he is buried in the Mound Cemetery, Piketon, Ohio. I never heard what happened to the step-son that shot him. Muriel worked at Adena Regional Medical Center, Housekeeping and Laundry. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 1, 2001 at the Boyer Funeral Home, Waverly, Ohio with Rev. James Blanton officiating. Buriel will follow in Evergreen Union Cemetery, Waverly, Ohio. Friends may call at the funeral home 4-8 p.m. Sunday and from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday. Additional Comments: When Dad died the Rev. that officiated had never even met him when he was alive. Since our cousin, James Blanton had become a Reverand, we asked him to officiate. He did a good job. Born April 2, 1920 in Pike County, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Anna B. McKinney Whaley. Prededed in death her husband, Conley Askins, on Jan. 20, 1975, she is survived by two sons, Donald Pettit of Plains City, and Robert Pettit of Mesa, Ariz.; three sisters, Cora Pettit of Waverly, Mrs. Levi (Muriel) Blair of Clarksburg, and Mrs. Sarah Sager of Amlin; three grandchildren; and a great- grandson.
