Cokonougher rcokon@hotmail.com July 22, 2004, 2:47 pm 19 Feb. 1846. Scioto Gazette; Chillicothe, Ohio. George PENNISTON a Revolutionary soldier died on Feb. 9, 1846 at his residence in Pike Co. Oh in 88 year of his age. The deceased was a Revolutionary soldier and served under Gen. Wayne during the last war. He has left a family of 10 children and 52 grand and great grandchildren to mourn his loss." Additional Comments: A recap of this obituary can also be found on page 3 of the 31 July 1976 edition of the Chillicothe, Ohio Gazette. George Penniston also has descendants in Ross County, Ohio. The Penniston name was also occasionally spelled "Pennisten." George Penniston was married to Rebecca Wheaton. Their children were; (1) Sarah (Salley), who married James Lawson Clark; (2) George, who married Rebecca Rains and Vianna Murphy; (3) Isaac C.; (4) Lewis, who married Elizabeth Boyles; (5) John; (6) Joseph; who married Jerusha Lunbeck and Sarah Hill; (7) Polly; (8) Kitty; (9) Hannah; and, (10) Priscilla. Page 18 of "Pike County Miscellanea, V.1" by the Pike County Genealogy Society, an uncataloged folder located in the State of Ohio Library in 1978 in Columbus, Ohio, says: "George Pennisten died on February 19, 1846, aged 88, and the Scioto Gazette reported: 'The deceased was a Revolutionary War soldier and served under Gen. Wayne during the last war.' The last war preceding 1846 was the War of 1812 at which time Wayne had long been dead at Erie, Pennsylvania, shortly after the Battle of Fallen Timbers. But Pennisten would have been about 17 when Anthony Wayne raised a regiment from among his eastern Pennsylvania neighbors and went to fight in the Canadian campaign of 1775 - 1776. - - - So although Pennisten is unlisted in the army records he could have been fighting under Wayne any time during the 20 years."
