Liverpool Gazette - 31 July 1875 pg 1 Died, at her home in Wilmington, Delaware, July 17th, R. Isabella, wife of Rev. Lafyette Marks. The deceased was the eldest daughter of the late Samuel Quigley, M.D. of Calcutta, Ohio, and will be remembered by her many acquaintances as one whom it was a pleasure to know. She possessed remarkable qualities of mind and heart, and, consequently was much loved and admired. As a pastor's wife she was highly esteemed, and was deeply lamented in the community where her death occured. For two years and half previous to her death she was the subject of almost unparalleled suffering and helplessness, but through it all she was remarkably sustained. Her patience and cheerfulness never failed her. Her hope of the Rest beyond was bright. She was lovely in her life and peaceful in her death. Though taken away in the prime and vigor of her womanhood, her life and example will be remembered by her sorrowing family and friends as one worthy of imitation. Mr. Worcester has been identified with the business interests of East Liverpool from its inception as a village of many years ago, and he leaves a host of mourning relatives and friends. Samuel Worcester was born in Plymouth, N.H. July 11, 1811, and removed to Brownsville, Pa. In 1818, where he lived a short time and then moved to Birmingham, Pa., where he followed the occupation of a glass blower until about 35 years ago, when he moved to this city and settled on Babb’s island and followed farming for a number of years. About 22 years ago he sold the island and gave up farming, purchasing the building at the corner of Second and Market streets and opening up a grocery. In this business he continued until his death. In 1834 he was ordained as a preacher of the M.P. church, but did not follow this sacred calling regularly. He was an upright, conscientious Christian and many a poor family have received the benefit of his charity. At one time Mr. Worcester was well off in worldly possessions, but misfortune overtook him. He was interested in the Star pottery, that was destroyed by fire a few years ago, a blow from which he never recovered financially. For the past ten years he has been an invalid, but only in the past year has he been compelled to take his bed. He died like a tired child going to sleep in its mother’s arms. Just one week since, he was taking a walk and was caught in the rain, which exposure brought on his fatal illness. Mr. Thomas was born in Cobridge, near Burslem, Staffordshire, England, September 14th, 1809. He married at Asbury, County Chester, in England, and came to this country in 1833, settling in Patterson, New Jersey; from thence he removed to Troy, Indiana, and in 1846 settled in East Liverpool. He followed the trade of crate maker as an occupation, and continued at it and potting until shortly after the death of his wife, some five years ago. He then gave up business and retired. He had two children – Maria and Richard – when he came to this country, having buried three in England. He now leaves two sons living, William and Richard, both of this city, the latter being the head of the Thomas knob pottery. Maria died at Troy, Indiana, in 1850, while on a trip down the river, having only been married to Jethro Manly some five weeks. From the time of the commencement of his illness until Friday morning last, he suffered great pain; since that time he was unconscious. The remains will be interred in Spring Grove cemetery tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock. The remains of his wife will be lifted from the old cemetery, and interred by his side in Spring Grove cemetery at the same hour. He was a good kind husband and father, and held in great respect by all who had any acquaintance with him, and leaves a wide circle of friends to mourn his demise. He took the right medicine through the night until about 6 o’clock this morning when he took another dose. As it happened there were two bottles, similar in size and appearance, standing on the mantle, one of them containing carbolic acid. By mistake he took the last dose out of the acid bottle, and died in a short time afterward. The deceased was well known in this city, and was a brother of the late Mrs. Josiah Thompson; also of Mrs. Col. W. H. Vodrey. He was seventy two years of age, and leaves a family of seven daughters and four sons. He has of late been prominently connected with the Christian Disciple church, recently formed in this city, and was to have been the census enumerator of this place, had he lived. He was a man respected by all who knew him, and leaves a great circle of friends that are pained and shocked at his death. The medicine for which the acid was taken in mistake was Jamacia ginger. One teaspoonful of the deadly acid had been taken when Mrs. Jackman came downstairs after her husband. He was in terrible pain and could only point to the bottle, which was the first knowledge anyone had of the fearful mistake that had occurred. In one hour’s time he had breathed his last. No date has yet been set for the funeral. They will wait until replies can be obtained from sons, who are in the West, who have been telegraphed for. Isaac Lindersmith, one of the best know residents of Salineville, died at his home Saturday night of cancer of the stomach, after an illness of more than a year. Deceased was born in Dungannon in 1828, and has been a resident of this county from his birth. His father settled in this county in 1812, and his grandfather served in the Revolution and his father in the war of 1812. Deceased was married to Martha Whitacre, in Carroll county, in 1850, and eight children are living – three sons, one of whom is in Dakota, one in Montana, and one in the Alaska and Washington trade; and five daughters, Mrs. James C. The deceased was one of the oldest and best respected citizens of this place. He was born in Havre De Grace, France, on the 2d day of December 1812, and lived with his parents in that country until about 1830, or the uprising among the French people, and the attempt to dethrone the reigning monarch, Louis Phillipe, who had but a short time before come into power. In that revolution he was wounded in the right arm, but recovered from the wound, which, however bothered him at times all through life. As a result of the insurrection he was one of those who were forced to leave their country and he came to America, locating at Pittsburgh. Here he engaged in business, and in 1823 he was united in marriage to Miss Eva Russe, by whom he had a family of eleven children, two of whom, with the mother, have long since preceded him to the tomb. Shortly after marriage he removed to Gallipolis, Ohio, and thence to New Brighton, Pa., spending but a few years in each place, and from thence coming to East Liverpool in 1857, since which this has been his permanent home. Since his location here, he has been one of East Liverpool’s steadfast, upright and prominent citizens, filling numerous offices of honor, and being elected to the office of Mayor for several terms. Of late years he has been a sufferer from a sort of heart failure and a disease of the eyes, (being under treatment for the latter for some time) and other afflictions incidental to increasing age, but has always managed to personally supervise his business until within the past few days. His last illness, inflammation of the bowels, seized him about 4 o’clock on Friday morning last. Toward that evening he was resting somewhat easier and it was thought he would soon be around again, but during the night he was suddenly taken worse, and gradually sank until 8:35 last evening when he passed away calmly and peacefully, having nearly completed his 78th year. He leaves a numerous host of friends to mourn his demise, besides a family, as follows: Frank, Charles, James and William. All married and residing here, and Emily, Amelia and Eilen, residing at home; also Mrs. J.H. Burgess and Mrs. Wm. Burgess, residing here; also Mrs. Olla Hassa, an adoped daughter. Sixteen grandchildren, and three great grandchildren also survive him. The remains will be interred in Spring Grove cemetery tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev. Williams, of the Episcopalian church, officiating.
