The end was peaceful, calm, and happy. She went out into the other world conscious to the very last, fearlessly and gladly. For the past few days Mrs. Dr. Ikirt has been slowly sinking. She has for the past two years been an invalid, resulting from the grip. She has since last summer gradually declined, and laid ill for the past several months. She was prostrated only last Saturday and absent relatives were quickly sent for. Her son, Congressman George P. Ikirt, returned home Monday, as before mentioned, and has since been at her bedside. Mrs. Dr. J.J. Ikirt was born back in Columbiana county, near Elkton, February 4, 1824, and is therefore about a month past the seventieth anniversary of her birth. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Fife, and she was a daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Fife – one of the oldest families in that region. Her mother was a Hamilton – also one of the old Scotch-Irish families who settled near Chartiers, Pa., early in the history of the county. Mrs. Ikirt’s father was a soldier in the war of 1812, and shortly after came to Columbiana county and married. Elizabeth was the only daughter in a family of five. Two brothers, John and Isaac Fife, survive her, and are still residents of the county. Deceased married Dr. J.J. Ikirt on 5th of February 1851, and four children were fruits of the union – George P. Ikirt, Mrs. A.H. Clark, and Mrs. Mary Crow, all of this city, and another daughter who died at the age of eighteen months. Mr. and Mrs. Ikirt lived most of their lives in Madison township near West Point, coming to this city in ’75. At the age of eight years Mrs. Ikirt found her Lord, and she has since been a faithful member of the Presbyterian church. Her husband, Dr. J.J. Ikirt, survives her. She was a faithful wife and mother, and was devoted to her home. In character she was quiet, but steadfast, and her disposition made her beloved by all who knew her. Last night Mrs. Ikirt called all her kin, including her children and grandchildren, and gave to all a parting admonition. The funeral occurs at 2 p.m. Sunday from the home, on Sixth street; interment at Riverview This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/ohfiles/ File size: 2.9 Kb ______________________________ ------------------------------ X-Message: #9 Date: 10 Jun 2004 20:21:21 -0000 From: Archives To: OH-BMD-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <20040610202121.19211.qmail@mail.best1-host.com> Subject: Oh-Columbiana Co. Allison, an aged resident of Second Street, this city, after but a few weeks’ illness, his ailments arising from old age mainly, passed to sleep. The deceased was born in Washington county Pa., on the 6th of March 1806, and while but a youth moved with his parents to a farm in Hancock (then Brooke) county, on the hills directly opposite the East End of this city, where they resided until April 1830, when he was united in marriage to Mrs. Fannie Wilcoxen, to whom he had five children, four of whom are living, viz: Charles B. Allison and Mrs. Fannie Susan Bryan, of this city, and Thomas and Richard Allison, of Iowa. After the death of the first wife he was again married, on May 26, 1845 to Miss Nancy Ann Goddard, to whom he had eleven children, ten of whom are living, viz: Mrs. Mary E. Johnston, Albert L., James E., Mrs. Sarah B. Bowles, and George, all of this city; William B. Allison, St. Clair township; Mrs. Harriet A. Newman, Mrs. Gilson, Madison township; Steenrod Allison, of Wellsville, and Rosa B. Hill, of Tiltonville. During the last two weeks of his illness he was partially demented, and required careful watching to keep in bed. About fifteen years ago he sold his property in Grant district and moved to a farm in Madison township, this county, where he resided until about four years since. His first wife lies in Fairview cemetery, but his remains will be interred in Spring Grove, this city, at a date to be determined by the answers from telegrams sent to the two sons in Iowa. The funeral, however, will not take place before tomorrow. Although well up in years, the deceased carried his age well, and in appearance did not look to the casual observer to be any older than his oldest son, Charles B., although between their ages there was a difference of twenty five years. Diedrick, at the corner of Broadway Within the past few days the Crisis announced the serious illness of and Robinson street. The physical affliction from which he was a sufferer, strangulated hernia – of more than forty years’ standing – precluded the possibility of his recovery, when his extreme age – seventy nine years – was considered. After suffering terribly for several days, he passed away last night about midnight, and with his decease there passed from life one of the best know old time citizens of East Liverpool. Gibson Verner was born September 18, 1814 in Allegheny county, Pa, and was therefore a little more than seventy nine years of age at the time of his death. Early in the thirties he came to this county, and lived in Calcutta for several years. While there he married Elizabeth Gray, in 1836, and to this union was born seven children – William Henry of Peoria, Ill.; Mary Jane, since deceased of Columbus; John Wesley, of East Brady, Pa.; Wilders Gray of New York; Clark of Illinois; Mrs. Charlotte Hain of Pittsburgh, and Mrs. Joseph L. Deidrick of this city. The faithful wife died in 1850, after having been married fourteen years. Deceased moved to this city in 1842, and went into business first as a harness maker, and subsequently as jeweler and watchmaker. At this last trade he was faithful until his death – having occupied the little shop in the Buchheit property, on Second street, near the Cleveland and Pittsburgh station for twenty two years. He was once elected Mayor of the city – about 1850 – and he was also a member of the City Council. He refused on numerous occasions proffered offices of public trust, always preferring the quiet of private life. Deceased was a member of the First Presbyterian church for years, and was until a few years since a member of East Liverpool Lodge Masons. The funeral has been set for Friday at 2 o’clock p.m. The services will be held either at the house or at the church – the place will be announced tomorrow. He was born in Washington county, Pa; and was, married in 1817 and settled on a farm in Hancock county, near where he died. He always engaged in farming, aside from several successful speculative ventures, one being that he negotiated a lease of his farm for a large royalty to oil operators, which netted him thousands of dollars. He was possessed of untiring energy, and wonderful vitality, and made his yearly trips South and West. Until one year ago “old Jimmie Gardner’s” white hat, a very tall one, was known all over the three States named. He was descended from a long lived family, his grandfather dying at 107, and it is related that he killed a squirrel with a rifle at a long shot of a hundred paces, after he was ninety years old. He had chewed tobacco, and taken “a gentleman’s glass: all his days. Five children survive him. He died wealthy.
