Hambel was a bachelor, about 56 years of age, and owned a small farm which he worked, living alone. L.F. Farmer, a neighbor, on Saturday going to see Hambel on a matter of business, found the door locked; and, being unable to make himself heard, looked through a window and discovered deceased lying motionless across a bed on his face. Other neighbors were notified, and a door was forced open. From indications death had occurred more than 24 hours previous. Hambel had not been seen since Thursday evening, at which time, however, he appeared to be in his usual health. Squire J.N. Rose, of this city, who had been delivering a Memorial address at Fredericktown, was sent for to hold an inquest. It is probable that a post mortem examination will be held. It is believed, however, that death was the result of heart disease. There was no appearance of violence. Hambel had been an almost life-long resident of St. Clair township. He was brother in law of Mrs. John Hambel (nee Smith), of this city, and beside John – who is in business in Pittsburgh – deceased had also a brother, Samuel, living in Kansas. Deceased was well known in this city. Mr. Thompson has been in failing health for two years past, from kidney trouble, but had so far rallied in the early summer as to be able to drive out, and some hopes were entertained of his ultimate recovery. However, a relapse came, and for six weeks he had been confined to his bed. John Thompson was born in Calcutta April 1, 1820. He was a brother of the late Josiah Thompson. He was married in 1850 to Maria, daughter of Augustine M. Dawson, of Calcutta. His wife and three children – Charles F.; John M. and Miss Luna – survive. They were all present when death came. The funeral will occur Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock, from the homestead on Calcutta road, and the burial will be at Longs Run cemetery. For many years deceased was known as the leading general merchant in the county, when old Calcutta was a business center. For a number of years past, however, he has lived a comparatively retired life, managing only his large real estate holdings. He was the soul of honor and sterling integrity. Indeed, it has been well remarked that if all men were like John Thompson the world would need no locks or bolts, or criminal laws.
