Thomas, Manufacture, Ill Short Time, Is Dead Charles E. Thomas, 77, manufacturer, died Saturday morning at the city hospital of heart trouble. He had been ill several weeks, but was much improved Thursday and Friday, however, the end came very suddenly. Mr. Thomas was born in Maryland, but had lived here the greater part of his life. His first employment was with Thomas and Mast, builders of grain drills. Afterwards when John H. Thomas sold out his interests to Mr. Mast, Charles E. Thomas and his brother, Joseph W. Thomas, became partners in the firm of Thomas, Ludlow and Rodgers who also made grain drills. After that firm sold out, he became a stockholder in The Thomas Manufacturing company, which is now in business here. Mr. Thomas was vice president of the Thomas Manufacturing company and was at his desk as lat as three weeks ago. Mr. Thomas was a member of Christ Episcopal chrch [sic], and was senior warden for many years, and at the time of his death. He was an upright Christian gentleman, honest in his opinions, modest in expressions, sincere in his friendships, and courteous to all. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Jennie L. Thomas, and by one sister, Miss Josephine S. Thomas, who is in ill health, and is spending the winter in Florida; and by the children of his sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Raffensperger, and by the children of his brother, John H. Thomas, who are residents of the city, and by the children of his brother Richard P. Thomas, who live in the west. The funeral services will be held at the Christ Episcopal church, on Monday afternoon at two o’clock. Friends will kindly omit flowers. Matthews, 2500 Signal Hill rd., died at 2:30 pm. Wednesday in Mercy Hospital of cystic fibrosis following several weeks illness. Ann was a third grade pupil in the Ridgewood Elementary School and attended Covenant Presbyterian Church. Survivors other than her parents include one brother, Thomas Anderson Matthews, III; one sister, Mary Bonser Matthews; and her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Fred M. Wallace of Springfield. Her body was taken to the Jackson-Lytle funeral home but was returned to the residence where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Services will be held in the residence at 3 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Alexander Meakin of Covenant Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery. Thomas, 61, former Springfield city commissioner and head of Red Cross fund drives here in the 1930’s, died suddenly Saturday afternoon at his home in Bethesda, Md. Born in Springfield, Sept. 7, 1893, the son of William S. and Fannie Sentney Thomas, Mr. Thomas had resided in this city until 1939 when he went to Washington, D.C., to accept a position in the U.S. Bureau of Foreign Trade. Later, he went to work in the Bureau of Economics on World Trade. At the time of his death, he was with the Department of Commerce, for which he went on many missions to foreign countries. Sometime after his return from World War I, in which he served as a lieutenant in the Naval Air Corps, he was elected to the Springfield City Commission, a body on which his father had previously sat at the age of 21 years. Besides being active in Red Cross work, Mr. Thomas was on of the organizers of the Little Theater group in Springfield. He was a member of the Kiwanis club, Covenant Presbyterian Church and the American Legion. He also was president and treasurer of the Thomas Manufacturing Co. here. Survivors are his widow, Leona Davis Thomas, who came to Springfield from Mississippi as a Red Cross nurse and married Mr. Thomas here; his mother, Mrs. Fannie Thomas of Springfield, and a sister, Mrs. Burton Carr of Richmond, Ind. Mr. Thomas’ body is expected to arrive in Springfield Tuesday morning and will be taken to the Richards Memorial Home. Time of services will be announced later, with burial on the Thomas lot in Ferncliff Cemetery. Rev. J. S. O'Keefe celegrated requiem mass and preached an eloquent sermon. The church was well filled with relatives and friends of the deceased many of whom sent tokens of love and esteem in the form of beautiful flowers. As the body was carried from the church the choir sang, "In Thy Sacred Heart, O Jesus." As the friends passed out of the church they gazed for the last time upon the features of the dead. Burial was made in the church cemetery on East Main street, the pallbearers being the following four sons and two sons-in-law: James, Joseph, Frank and Peter Clark; James Madden of Cleveland and Ralph Arthur of East Norwalk. N. Summers, a former chief justice of the Ohio Supreme Court, died at 8 a.m. Friday at her residence, 1212 E. High st. Her death followed a brief illness. Mrs. Summers was a member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church, the Woman’s Town Club and the Springfield Country Club, of which her husband had been president from 1919 to 1925 inclusive. During the active hears of her life, Mrs. Summers had been a leader and participant in numbrous local affairs of a civic, social and philanthropic nature. Mrs. Summers was a daughter of the late Mr. And Mrs. John H. Thomas, pioneer Springfield residents. Survivors include two sons, Thomas B. Summers of Washington, D.C., and Daniel Summers of Toledo, O.; a daughter, Mrs. Henry Beckley; a grandson, Addison s. Beckley; a sister, Mrs. Lewis P. Matthews, and a nephew, Thomas A. She had been in poor health for some time. Fred G. Laible of the undertaking firm of Laible & Brady, went to Toledo this morning to prepare the body for burial and will arrive in the city with the remains this afternoon. The body will be taken to the home of Mrs. Clark's son, Joseph R. Clark, No. 36 State street. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 8:30 o'clock in St. Mary's church with interment in the cemetery on East Main street. He is survived by his wife Anna, two daughters, Mrs. Helen Fox and Eileen; two sons John and Glen; one sister, Mrs. Julia Arthur of Ogego, NY; and one brother James of Lima and grandson Charles Fox.
