KS Transcribed by Jennifer Neff, 2005 ANOTHER OLD SETTLER GONE Eli Neff died at his home near Middletown, Sunday evening, in the 90th year of his age. He had been in poor health for several months, but could oversee his business on the farm, until a short time before his death. Eli was born in Canfield, Mahoning county, Ohio, May 23, 1821, and came to Kansas in 1872. He purchased large tracts of land on the Verdigris river bottoms. He moved his family to Kansas in 1874. The family resided in Humboldt most of the time, but during the summer season for many years they lived on the Wilson county ranch. Mr. Neff was an active and noted stockman and was widely known over the country. Those who survive him are his wife of this city; one son, O.P. Neff of California; Mrs. H.A. Brown, of Iola; and Mrs. Cora Young and Mrs. George McKinley of Humboldt. The body was brought to his home in Humboldt and the funeral held at the residence at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Burial took place in Mt. Hope cemetery And was attended by many old friends of the deceased and family. Wilson County Citizen, Wilson Co. KS, Fri, 19 Mar 1937 NEFF, O.P. [Homer] Circa 1854 to 18 Mar 1937 89 years Buffalo Blade, Buffalo, Wilson Co. KS Fri, 19 Mar 1937 Transcribed by Jennifer Neff, 2003 O.P. NEFF PASSES AWAY [Homer] Miss Nannie Neff and Mrs. Meta White received word Thursday of the death of their father; Mr. O.P. Neff at Los Angeles, Calif. Mr. Neff was postmaster of Buffalo in an early day, leaving here more than thirty-eight years ago. He has been a resident of California since 1902. Two weeks ago Mr. Neff fell and fractured his hip and never recovered from the injury. He was 83 years of age. Other children who survive are: Omer Neff Jr., of Palo Alto; Eli Neff, Los Angeles; Mrs. Dr. L. G. Jones of San Diego, Calif., and George Neff of Kansas City. A letter to the editor from Dr. Jones, O.P.’s son-in-law: Buffalo Blade, 26 March 26, 1937 Dear Editor, Just a few lines to say through your paper that wife’s father, O.P. Neff, known to many old timers in and around Buffalo, passed to his reward, March 15, 1937, at the advanced age of 89 years. He had been ailing for some time, got better and was up and around but unfortunately, he fell and broke his left leg near the socket, was taken to the hospital and his leg put in a cast but his age was against the process of healing and he quietly fell asleep about midnight March 15. Grandpa Neff had many amiable qualities, a man of quiet habits unassuming, a good neighbor, a good father and a friend to all. The world could well afford to lose many worse men than O.P. Neff. Sincerely, Leva G. Jones Additional Comments: Comment: Jennifer Neff, 2003 I believe O.P. [Homer] was born in 1854 so he would have been 83 years old at the time of death. It is documented that his parents were married in 1851. It is also known that he was the oldest child. The next child, in birth order, was Selby Neff and it is documented that he was born 2 Oct 1856. No Burial place is mentioned, his wife was buried at Buffalo cemetery in Buffalo, Wilson Co. Neff died at her home in this city Sunday evening, after an illness of one day. Cause of death was acute pneumonia. On Saturday she was around as usual, but took with a chill towards evening, and by Sunday morning pneumonia developed, of an acute form, which she was unable to withstand. Mrs. Neff was in her eighty sixth year, and has been a strong active woman, of a cheerial disposition who took considerable interest in the passing events around her home and elsewhere. With her husband and family she came to Kansas in 1874, and has lived in Humboldt a greater part of the time since coming to the State. Her husband, Eli Neff purchased a large tract of land on the Verdigris river bottom, where Mrs. Neff used to spend the summers. Her husband died in August this year. She leaves one son, Homer Neff, who is in California; three daughters, Mrs. Cora Young, and Mrs. George McKinley, of this city, and Mrs. Dr. H.A. Brown, of Iola. Mahoning Herald, 16 Apr 1875 Transcribed by Jennifer Neff, 2005 DIED In this city, on Wednesday morning April 14th 1875, in the fifteenth year of her age, Miss Ella, one of the twin daughters of Mr. Eli Neff. Our community has again been shocked by a very sudden death. This time one of the most interesting of the family is taken so suddenly that we can scarcely realize that she is dead. Ella was an unusually interesting child, and was admired by everybody that knew her. She had been complaining somewhat for ten days previous to her death, and was only confined to her bed one day. Thus has another loved one been snatched from a happy family circle. In such only a few short days ago that we saw her as she passed going to school, and she seemed a picture of health, beauty, and intelligence; always kind and affectionate to her associates; she was dear to us all. But now ”there’ll be one vacant chair.” To Effie, her twin sister, we especially offer our most sincere sympathies; she will miss her dear sister most of all. And to the father, mother, sisters and brother we would say, “The Lord hath given and the Lord hath taken away; blessed to the name of the Lord.” She has gone, we trust to that fair land where the bloom of a new birth will never fade from her cheeks. Health there will never be swallowed by disease. There the smile of her Savior will be the future of her soul forever, and there may we all – father, mother, sisters, brother and friends – meet her, when our pilgrimage on earth is ended. Ella, Thou was mild and lovely, Gentle as the summer breeze, Pleasant as the air of evening – When it floats among the leaves, Peaceful in thy silent slumber, Peaceful in the grave so low, Thou no more will join our number, Thou no more our songs shall know. Dearest sister, thou hast left us, Here the loss we deeply feel, But tho God’s light hast bereft us, He can still our sorrow heal. Yet again we hope to meet thee, When the day of life is final, Then in heaven with joy greet thee, Where no farewell tear is shed.” Additional Comments: Comment: Jennifer Neff, 2005 This obituary came from the Mahoning Herald and was probably contributed from the city where her death occurred. One year after her death the family is listed in an 1885 State Census in the City of Humboldt, KS. Ella probably died in Humboldt, KS. To date no marker has been located for her.
