The Funeralwas held Wednesday at 1 pm at Radcliff. Funeral sermon was by Elder A. B. Kirkendall. Burial in Radcliff. Vale and Martin were the undertakers- Additional Comments: Joanna Cottrill was the wife of Andrew Cottrill. Her maiden name was Barnhouse. They had 3 children 1. He was 70 years old . He was a trustee of Elk Township for several years as well as the Infrimary Director of the County for two years and was also president of the Soldiers Relief Commission of the County at the time of his death. He was a soldier of the Union and served over three years, enlisting when he was only 16 years of age in Company E 75th Ohio Volunteers. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, was afterward exchanged and served until the close of the war and mustered out in July 26, 1865. He is survived by his wife, and two sons John L. and Samuel F. Beckley of McArthur and one brother Wallace Beckley of Point Rock and one sister Mrs Wilson Searls of Wellston. Funeral services were held in the M E Church Thursday at 1 o'clock pm conducted by Rev W. E Prior, burial was in the Elk Cemetery. His old comrades of Sergt Reed Post acted as pall bearers and conducted the ritualistic service at the grave. Additional Comments: Herbert's wife was Ella Amanda Salts. They were married September 1897. They had 2 children John L. Beckley and Samuel Francis Beckley. Ella died March 5, 1950. D. B. Dye. He was buried in the Hixon Cemetery, Dundas. He was born at Bloom Furnace, Lawrence County, August 17, 1832. His parents were natives of Alsace, Loraine, Germany,and came to Ohio in 1803. He was the first Postmaster at Latrobe Furnace in Jackson county in 1855 and was later a bookkeeper at Keystone Furnace and also manager at Eagle Furnace. He fought in the Civil war and enlisted in Company L 12th Ohio Cavalry on February 26, 1864. He was promoted to Sergeant on July 1, 1865 at Lexington Kentucky. After the close of the war, he returned to Eagle Furnace. In 1868 he married to Ellen Salts,then moved to Bainbridge, Ohio in 1880, where he lived for a few years, then returned to Dundas, where he lived continuously until his death. Mr. Benner for a number of years studied and issued forecasts of financial conditions of the country, the trend of the iron business in which he was engaged for many years being the basis for his forecasts. He published his book of prophecies in the 1880's and with updated supplements from time to time, until 1908 forecasting events and conditions of the Country and predicting the advance or falling off of prices of iron, farm products, etc and the effect produced on business. His book had wide circulation.Bankers and business men in the money centers of the country had a copy on their desks or in their libraries,with frequent comments of the Metropolitan newspapers of a complimentary nature appearing from time to time as his forecasts were issued. Additional Comments: Samuel Benner married Eleanor "Ellen" Salts on May 14, 1868 in Eagle Furnace, Vinton County, Ohio. They had one son Stephen John Benner. Another newspaper article has Samuel's birthplace as Bainbridge, Ross County, Ohio.He operated a woolen mill in Bainbridge as well. He had a large farm in Dundas and it was operated by his son later in life.
