S. Thomas is Mourned – Funeral Plans Made Funeral of William S. Thomas, who died suddenly at 1 p.m. Monday following an attack of heart trouble in the Grand barber shop, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the residence, 721 3. High st. Rev. Dr. Charles Ryan Adams, pastor of the Covenant Presbyterian church, will officiate. Burial will be in Ferncliff cemetery. Various business and other organizations to which Mr. Thomas belonged are making arrangements to take suitable action on his death. The board of directors of the Mad River National bank, of which Mr. Thomas had been president for nineteen years and a director for thirty years, met in regular session Tuesday forenoon and adopted resolutions testifying to the great loss sustained by the bank in the death of Mr. Thomas. The resolutions adopted and certified to the family by Cashier Charles F. Harrison follow: “The officers and directors of the Mad River National bank have this day heard with profound regret of the death of W. S. Thomas. “William S. Thomas was born April 22, 1857, and came from one of the oldest families in Clark county. Immediately after completing his education, he identified himself with the Thomas Manufacturing company of this city of which institution he was the president at the time of his death, and to his business ability and integrity in a large measure is due the prominent position of that company in the manufacturing world. “Mr. Thomas was for many years a director of the Mad River National bank of Springfield, Ohio, and for the last nineteen years served as its president. His high character, broad experience, sound business judgment and conscientious attention to the duties of that office made his service one of inestimable value to this institution and won for him the confidence, respect and esteem of all connected with it and of its many patrons. “Be it resolved, therefore, by the board of directors of the Mad River National bank of Springfield, Ohio: “That in the death of W. S. Thomas the bank has lost a loyal and capable officer; “That all connected with it in an official capacity, as well as its patrons, have lost a friend whose wise counsel and unfailing courtesy will be greatly missed; “That the memory of this splendid service and his high business ideals will remain as a standard for future emulation in the community in which he lived; “That to his family in its bereavement we extend our sincerest sympathy; “That this resolution be spread upon the minutes of the board and a copy be given to the family of Mr. Thomas.” President George W. Winger of the Springfield Clearing House association, Tuesday appointed H. E. Hebrank, treasurer of the American Trust and Savings bank; Edward Harford, president of the Springfield Savings society, and A. H. Penfield, cashier of the Springfield National bank, to draft resolutions on the death of Mr. Thomas. These will be submitted at a meeting of the association, which will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. The session of the Covenant Presbyterian church held a meeting Monday night when a committee composed of Judge F. M. Hagan and M. L. Milligan was named to prepare suitable resolutions regarding the sudden death of Mr. Thomas. For years he had been active in this church and served for anumber of years as elder. At his death he was trustee. The trustees of the sinking fund will hold a meeting Tuesday afternoon when action will be taken on the death of Mr. Thomas, who served on this board for many years. The plant of the Thomas Manufacturing company of which Mr. Thomas was president was closed at 3 p.m. Monday until after the funeral. The Democratic executive committee of which Mr. Thomas was vice-chairman will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday to draft a fitting memorial regarding the loss of Mr. Thomas, who had been a leader in Democratic politics for many years. Mr. Thomas was president of the Men’s Literary club at his death. He was also a director of the Springfield Y.M.C.A., a trustee of Wooster university, and an active member of the Lagonda club. Besides Mr. Thomas’ other activities mentioned Monday in the Daily News, he was financially interested in the publication of the Daily Democrat during its existence.
