T. E. CUNNINGHAM As a further mark of respect due the memory of their dead comrade, Theodore E. Cunningham, the members of the Allen County bar, with the many lawyers from other northwestern Ohio counties, who were present at the funeral, assembled in the Court room, and many and eloquent were the words that went up in honor of the deceased. The Putnam County Bar, which was nearly all present, submitted the following tribute: At a meeting of the members of the Bar of Putnam county, called for the purpose of taking action with reference to the death of Hon. Theodore Cunningham, the following were adopted: In the providence of God there has passed from among us one whom we have admired, respected, loved. Generous, courteous, high souled, able, cultivated, in every sense of the word, a man, the place to our hearts which he has filled will remain empty for evermore. Doan Cunningham is dead. In token of our sorrow for his loss, our respect for his memory, and our sympathy with those near and dear to him.— Resolved, That the Bar of Putnam county with whom he associated and whose every member was his loving friend, will hear him always in their memories as an example of high professional probity, of genial courtesy, of more than ordinary talent, in fact, of all the qualities which form a perfect lawyer. Resolved. That we tender to his sorrowing wife and children our heartfelt sympathy in this their time of trial, having but this comfort to offer, that his life here is but a prelude to the higher, happier life beyond. Resolved. That the Bar of Putnam county attend in a body the funeral of our deceased brother. Resolved. That these resolutions be spread upon the records of our Court, a copy be presented to his widow and that they be published in the papers of this and Allen County." The bride is a graduate of the School of Dramatic Art in New York, and although she has only been in Lima at intervals during the past few years she is very popular here. She was one of the organizers of the Community chorus in Lima, being instrumental in bringing Harry Barnhart here from New York. The groom headed the community chorus movement in New York and during the past year he composed the music for Percy McKaye’s “Community Masque” Entitled “Caliban,” which was given in celebration of the tercentenary of Shakespeare’s death. Mr. and Mrs. Farwell will spend the summer at Plattsburg, where the groom has charge of the musical program. He will also have the appointing of the musical directors for all the national encampments. They will probably reside in New York during the winter." R. W. Meily Falls Victim of a Sudden Attack. Heart Trouble Comes Suddenly to a Pioneer Resident. Was Lima’s Postmaster Under Pres. Cleveland. Leaves Wife and Two Sons – Funeral Will Not Be Held Before Monday. Stricken without a moment’s warning, with an unexpected attack of heart failure, Ringgold W. Meily, a pioneer citizen, who has been prominent among the older residents of the city for many years, died at his home 329 north West street, at 1:30 o’clock this morning. He had been in his usual good health and was seen about the city yesterday and last evening and the announcement of his death this morning came as a shock to the family’s wide circle of friends. Although 65 years of age, Mr. Meily was an exceptionally well-preserved man and his general appearance and activity made him seem many years younger than he was. Last night he had occasion to attend to some business matters down town and it was after 10 o’clock when he arrived at his home, between North and Wayne streets, on West street, and retired for the night. To his estimable wife there was no indication that he was not as hale and hearty as ever. Shortly before 1:30 o’clock this morning, however, Mrs. Meily was awakened suddenly and she noticed that Mr. Meily had risen from bed. She called to him and inquired if any—----------- But Three Survivors Ringgold W. Meily was one of a family of nine children whose names have been associated with the history of Lima for more than half a century. He was a son of John and Catherine (Fisher) Meily who came in this place when it was but a small village in 1845. John Meily, the father, was born at Lebanon, Penna., December 18, 1817, and died in this city, December 25, 1883. Mrs. Catherine Fisher-Meily, mother of the deceased, was born in Franklin county, Penna., July 25, 1820, and they were married at Mansfield, O., December 3, 1839. The elder Mr. Meily was part owner of a foundry in Mansfield but sold his interests there and came to Lima in 1845. Mrs. Meily died at the Meily homestead, corner of Metcalf and spring streets, several years ago. Of their nine children, but three are now living, they being Attorney George H. Meily, Mrs. Anna Eliza Freeman, Mrs. Harriet Amelia Motter, all residents of this city. The deceased members of the family who preceded R. W. Meily to the grave, in addition to the parents, were: Mrs. Olivia Brice, Gen. L. M. Meily, Mrs. Francis Josephine Orr, Mrs. Mary Vanda Irwin and Sarah Elizabeth Meily, who died in 1887 at the age of 24 years. Gen. L. M. Meily died in 1894. The eldest daughter in the family, Olivia, became the wife of the late United States Senator Calvin S. Most Venerable Pioneer Resident of Lima – Surrounded by Relatives at Her Death. As the clock was striking the hour of nine last night the death angel visited at 573 west Spring street, when Mrs. Catherine Fisher Meily peacefully passed away. Mrs. Meily was one of the oldest and most honored pioneer residents in the city. She was possessed of a strong mind, and during her lifetime had met some of the most prominent men in the country, and with them has conversed on the great topics of the day. She was noted for her wonderful memory and her ability in discussing the important questions. Until of late the deceased has been in good physical health, although 86 years of age. Early the past winter her health began failing until about two months ago she took to her room at the home of her daughter, where she died last night. Sweetly and peacefully she passed into the death slumbers surrounded by the immediate relatives. Deceased, relict of the late John H. Meily, was born July 25, 1820, at Franklin county, Pennsylvania. Five years after her marriage together with her husband she moved to this city from Mansfield. At that time Lima was but a village, and since then has prospered until it became the booming city that it now is. The place chosen for their home is now a business block, where the Meily block now stands on north Main street. The home in which the pioneer resident formerly resided is now occupied by a son George Meily, on west Spring street. She was the mother of nine children, the eldest now deceased, becoming one of the best known women in America, as Olivia Meily Brice, wife of the late Senator Calvin S. Brice. The second child, Luther M., was also distinguished in his day, and became Adjutant General of Ohio, after a local political career which made him probate judge of this county. The third child was Mrs. Eliza Freeman, still a resident of this city, and these three pioneer children came here with their parents in 1844. Born to the union as Allen county children were Ringgold, former postmaster, and George Henry, both of this city; Frances Josephine, wife of Col. W. P. Orr, of Piqua, who has been constantly at the bedside of the deceased; Mrs. Harriet Amelia Motter, wife of Attorney I. S. Motter, with whom deceased has made her home; Mary Vanda Irwin, of Port Huron, Mich., and Sarah Elizabeth, who died at the age of 24 years. Mrs. Meily came from the stoic German parentage and during her early residence here became one of the charter members of St. Paul’s Lutheran church, during which time the services were held in the old frame building on Union street. She was very active in the church work at that time, and it is believed is the only surviving one of the band who gave Lutheranism its birth in Allen county. She was indeed very active and did much good with her work along that line. Immediately after arriving in this city the family began to prosper, and the late John H. Meily was clerk of Allen county, besides becoming prominent in the manufacturing world of this city. At his death he left considerable property to his family. Besides the Union block on the northeast corner of the square he left considerable other property. The funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at three o’clock, at the late residence, with Rev. Bosart officiating. The services are to held Monday in order that relatives of the deceased may have time to get here in time to attend the services." Represented a Family that Gave Prominence. Deceased Was a Sister of Wife of Late Senator Brice and of R. W. Meily. The announcement this morning of the death of Mrs. Anna E. Freeman, one of Lima’s most prominent women, will recall to the minds of many of the city’s oldest citizens some of the early history of the city. Mrs. Freeman was a member of one of Lima’s pioneer families and the family name – Meily – has been associated with Lima history since 1845. Mrs. Freeman died at her late home, 528 west High street, last evening at 7 o’clock her death following a brief illness and being due to the effects of a stroke of apoplexy which had brought her recently declining health condition to a critical climax on last Thursday night. Mrs. Freeman had been unconscious throughout the day yesterday and the members of the family had been summoned in all haste to her bedside, it being regarded as impossible for recovery. Thus the end did not approach unexpectedly, but its arrival was never-the-less a shock to the loved ones who were at the bedside or who were enroute when the messenger arrived at the homestead. The profound and sincere sympathy of a wide circle of friends is extended to those who survive this splendid woman’s demise. Mrs. Anna Eliza Freeman was born in Mansfield, O. and was but a child when she came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Meily, to Lima, then a country hamlet, in 1845. Lima was her home from that time until the hour of her death last evening. She spent her useful life here and her husband, Cyrus Freeman, died here a number of years ago. The only survivors of the immediate family of Mr. and Mrs. John Meily, now, are Mrs. Harriett Amelia Motter, widow of the late Hon. Isaac S. Motter, and the venerable George H. Meily, attorney at law, who is now a patient in the Lima hospital where he recently underwent a surgical operation for relief from blood poisoning. Besides the parents, Mrs. Freeman was preceded in death by four sisters, Olivia, who was the wife of the late United States Senator Calvin S. Brice; Francis Josephine, who was the wife of Col. W. P. Orr, of Piqua; Mary Vanda Irwin and Sarah Elizabeth, who died in 1887 at the age of 24 years Of the family left by Mrs. Freeman there are two sons, Brice Freeman, of Columbus, who is in the service of the T. & O. C. railroad company, and Winfield S. Freeman of New York, connected with the land department of the Canadian Pacific railroad company and four daughter, Mrs. Kate Harris of Middleport, O.; Mrs. Lenore McClintock, Mrs. Francis Whitebred, of Larchmont, N. Y., and Miss Medora Freeman, residing at the home here. Arrngements are now being made to hold the funeral services from the residence on West High street at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon. The service will be in charge of the Rev. Thomas Knox, pastor of the Market street Presbyterian church, and interment will be made in Woodlawn cemetery."
