Liddil has been added to the Warren County OHGenWeb Project at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohwarren/Obits/liddil.htm#JohnMFLiddil - --------------------------------------------------------------- Comrade Joins Ranks Above. John Liddil Dies at Military Home and Is Buried at Lebanon with the Honors of a Soldier. John M. F. Liddil, 61, died suddenly from heart failure on last Friday in the National Military Home at Dayton after having lived there six weeks. His funeral was held from the G. A. R. hall on Monday afternoon at one o’clock. A staunch little band of veterans in blue, escorting the body, made again the march to the last resting place of their comrades. John Liddil loved the Post and every thing connected with the military life. He requested that his funeral and burial should be a soldier’s funeral and burial; and that it should be from the G. A. R. hall that he loved so well. The blood of his Revolutionary ancestors was strong in his veins. On June 2, 1868, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. Shellhouse who preceded him to the Better Land 12 years ago, dying July 21, 1894. To this union were born seven children, two sons and five daughters. Two daughters preceded their parents at the ages of 4 years. The remaining children who survive are Mrs. Geo. Hardy, Emerson Liddil, Mrs. Sabert Taylor, Clifford Liddil and Mrs. James Doughman. The last named were small when their mother was taken from them and thus he was father and mother both to them. He also leaves six grandchildren and one sister. He was a sufferer for 8 years. Departed this life on Monday morning last, at his residence in this place, Mr. Ichabod Corwin, in the 36th year of his age. Mr. C. was one of the younger sons of the late Ichabod Corwin, and a native of Lebanon. He had long been a highly esteemed member of the Baptist Church, and happily exhibited by a life of honor and probity, and a patient endurance of long years of severe suffering, those virtues and graces which characterize the true and humble follower of Christ. Cut off in the midst of his years, his relativesw and friends, while they mourn his early departure, have yet cause for consolation that one so afflicted and worn by disease, has at last been kindly released from his sufferings and removed to a world where sickness and sorrow and death are felt and feared no more. Dunlevy Died, On Wednesday last, at his residence in this place, Doct. John C. Dunlevy, late of Hamilton, of an epileptic fit. He had been somewhat indisposed during the day and the day previous, but has so far recovered, as half an hour before the fatal shock, to make some preparation for visiting a patient in the country. Suddenly becoming worse however, he had barely abandoned the idea, when he was seized with convulsions and loss of sense, which he survived but a short time. As a successful and skillful physician, few professional men enjoyed a larger public confidence – none perhaps more eminently deserved it. Prompt and attentive he was ever punctual at the hazard, of his own health, which for many years was extremely precarious, to the call of professional duty. In his death community have lost a much valued and useful citixen [sic] – his companion a kind and loving husband, and his now orphan children a kind and indulgent father. In their severe bereavement their only consolation is in the assurance that he has left a world of sorrow and affliction for one of endless joy and peace. His funeral takes place this morning at 10 o’clock at his residence. A Sermon will be delivered on the occasion by the Rev. Daniel Bryant. Source: The Western Star 24 Jan 1834 [copied from microfilm located at the Warren County Genealogical Society] - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Note: A lengthy memorial to the doctor was published in the 31 January 1834 edition of The Western Star, correcting the cause of death to "a sudden translation of a fheumatic affection" and extolling his virtues as a man, a doctor and a christian. A few passages of interest follow: "The Deceased was born ner Columbia at the mouth of the Little Miami on the 19th day of March 1796, and consequently had nearly completed his 38th year." "His education having been entirely acquired by his own industry and without the aid of schools or colleges, it could not be expected to be very extensive, especially as he labored on a farm until about 16 years of age. Yet he was a good English and tolerable Latin scholar, and his acquaintance with prfane and biblical history, and general Literature was accurate and extensive. He was amongst the first graduates of the Medical College of Ohio, though he had attended a course of lectures at Lexington some years before." "The day before his death when listening to the repeating of some verses by his eldest daughter, between 3 and 4 years old, he asked its mother with much interest whether the child would ever forget him if he should be called away." C. Brice on West Market Street, was the scene of a most brilliant festivity, the occasion being the marriage of her oldest daughter, Anna, to Mr. O. B. Selfridge, Jr. The invitations were issued about two weeks ago, and since that time society has been on the qui vive: and last evening at an early hour, the friends of the young couple commenced to assemble. A canopy was stretched from the front entrance to the gate, and attendants were in waiting at every turn to do all that was possible for the pleasure and comfort of the guests. A band of musicians was stationed in the hall, discoursing the most enchanting music on the mandolin and harp. The house was a perfect bower of beauty, with flowers everywhere, in every nook and corner that could possibly furnish room for a cluster of long stemmed roses, or bunch of exquisite chrysanthemums while the mantel-piece in the parlor, was banked with masses of Cornelia Cook and Jacqueminot roses and buds. The corner of the sitting room where the ceremony was performed, was made into a lovely arbor by festoons of smilax hung thickly with long stemmed rose buds. The presents were exhibited in the library and they comprised everything in handsome bric-a-brac and table furniture that one could possibly imagine. Solid silver and cut glass, lamps, vases and ornaments in solid brass, Royal Worcester, Belleck, Royal Dresden, Egyptian ware and Carlsbad, beautiful etchings and engravings, easels, rugs, fancy stands and tables, Swiss wood carvings, bisque figures, table linen, indeed a display of beautiful articles that one will hardly see equaled again in a life time. At a few minutes after eight o’clock the soft strains of a beautiful wedding march floated through the house and soon the bridal party passed down the stairs, through the parlor and into the sitting room, where the Rev. Dr. Taylor, of Wooster, awaited them. First the attendants, Miss Wuichet, on the arm of Mr. Gerard Scott, then Miss Selfridge with Mr. Bert Brice and the maid of honor, Miss Mary Brice, with Mr. Harlan. Last of all entered the lovely bride, on the arm of her groom, and they paused within the arbor of smilax, directly beneath a large true lover’s knot of chrysanthemums, and Marchal Neil rose buds. There in a most impressive manner, the beautiful ceremony was performed, which joined them together “as long as they both shall live.” The congratulations of their friends poured in upon them and as the bridal party turned to receive them, everyone noticed the exquisite toilettes of the ladies. The bride wore a surperb robe of white satin with the entire front of pearls. The long tulle veil was fastened upon her fair hair and fell to the edge of the train. She wore long white gloves, and carried a large bridal bouquet of of pink rose buds, the bride’s gifts to each of her maids were long white gloves and point lace handkerchiefs, while the groom presented handsome gauze fans. After the congratulations, the dining room was thrown open and a splendid collation served to the guests, by Kinsley, of Chicago. The newly married pair left at half past eleven o’clock for a short trip to Chicago and St. Louis, and the warmest and most sincere wishes of their host and friends follow them, not only through their bridal journey, but through the whole of life. Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Brice, of New York, Mrs. Dr. Firestone, Miss Firestone, the Rev. Dr. Taylor, and Mr. and Mrs. William Annat, of Wooster, Mrs. Fisher, of Marion, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. marble, of Van Wert, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Cunningham, of Bluffton, and several gentlemen and ladies from Ottawa attended the Selfridge-Brice nuptials, Wednesday evening." Motter and Miss Harriet A. Meily Last Night. The beautiful residence of Mrs. Jno. H. Meily, on West Spring street, was well filled last night by a large number of invited guests, who assembled to witness the nuptials of her daughter, Miss Harriet A. to Mr. Isaac S. Motter, one of the prominent attorneys of this city. The handsome parlors of the home were elaborately decorated with floral designs. Great banks of the choicest roses graced the mantles and the walls and ceiling were gracefully and beautifully draped with smilax and rare flowers, which shed their rich fragrance upon the air. Upon the north wall of the east parlor was a beautiful monogram containing two “Ms” dexterously woven from cut flowers so arranged as to produce a most beautiful effect. In an alcove in one of the rooms was stationed the Florentine Mandolin Orchestra, from Chicago, under the leadership of Signor Valise, which, throughout the evening discoursed most enchanting music. At eight o’clock, the hour which had been set for the marriage ceremony, the notes from the orchestra announced the approach of the wedding party. Mr. H. L. Brice and Miss Maude Shethar, of New York, led the way, followed by Mr. Jno. Young, of Piqua, and Miss May Irwin, of Goshen, Ind., Mr. R. W. Thrift, jr., and Miss Bess Meily, next to whom came the bride and groom elect. As the bridal party reached their position, the notes from the orchestra died away and Rev. J. H. Hunton pronounced the beautiful service of the Lutheran church, which bound forever the lives of Miss Harriet A. Meily and Mr. I. S. Motter by the golden chain of matrimony. The supper was prepared by Kinsley, the Chicago caterer, whose waiters came from Chicago yesterday and served the collation. Both bride and groom are well known in society circles in this city, the bride being the fourth daughter of the late Jno. H. Meily, and the groom one of the most successful of Lima’s young attorneys – the senior member of the law firm of Motter & Mackenzie. Local Relatives Received Message of Passing of Katherine Brice. Visiting France in Search of Health. Remains Will be Brought to This City for Interment. Local relatives received the sad news Thursday of Margaret Katherine Brice, youngest daughter of the late senator Calvin S. Brice, at Divone les Bains, in the southern part of France. The cable message did not give any particulars, but it is known that the deceased had been suffering for many months with an affection of the throat, and had gone abroad in the search of health. She left New York in May in company with her elder sister, Miss Helen Brice. John F. Brice, a younger brother and wife went abroad this summer, and W. K. Brice of New York, another brother sailed for France about ten days ago, which leads to the presumption that the surviving members of the immediate family were present at the time of her death. Margaret Katherine Brice was born in this city in July 1873 and was 38 years of age when death called. She resided in this city until 1882, when the late Senator moved his family to New York City. Since that time she has not been a frequent visitor to this city, the last visit being at the time of the funeral of her aunt, Mrs. Mary Irwin. Death has invaded the family frequently during the past few years. Senator Brice died in December 1898, and his wife followed in death exactly two years later. Captain Stewart M. Brice, the eldest son, died in June of last year. Besides the brothers John F. and W. K. Brice, and one sister, Miss Helen Brice, the following local residents survive to mourn her death: Mrs. I. S. Motter, Mrs. Anna E. Freeman, Mrs. O. B. Selfridge, aunts; George H. Meily, John K. Brice, and R. W. Meily, uncles; Benjamin Motter, Medera Freeman and Warren P. Meily, cousins. While no definite information is at hand it is probable that the remains will be brought to this city for interment in the family lot, facing the tomb of the late Senator and Mrs. Brice in Woodlawn cemetery."
