Wright Whitacre, son of Martin Whitacre and Mary (nee Howard) Whitacre, was born near Morrow October 8, 1849 and passed peacefully away after many weeks of suffering, July 11, 1917, aged 67 years 9 months, 3 days. He was first married to Anna Moon 1886 and to this union were born three children, Lewis and Morrow Whitacre now living and one son Raymond who died as an infant, the sainted mother following shortly after him. He was later joined in marriage to Kathryn Debold and to this happy union were born two daughters, Mary and Laverne. He became a member of the Sugar Run Baptist church in 1874 and remained faithful and active in the work of both church and Sunday School for over forty years. Several years ago he became a member of the Masonic Fraternity, Morrow Lodge No. 265, and recently joined Morrow Chapter No. 143, Royal Arch Masons. Mr. Whitacre is survived by a loving and faithful wife, four children, three grandchildren, six brothers and three sisters to mourn his loss. This beloved husband, father, brother and friend will be sadly missed by all. His religion stood for social service and help for humanity. He was always cheerful and optimistic and gave a kind word of counsel to every one. His generosity and hospitality radiated from every window and door of his palatial home as many people would attest from several counties in Ohio and states adjoining therto. He lived long enough to see his labors well rewarded in termporal and spiritual things. His great industry and frugality made him a strong factor in commercial and social matters throughout southern Ohio. Whatever task was given him he performed cheerfully and uncomplainingly and whatever talents the Lord may have given him he returned them two-fold richer. Good and faithful servant, thou hast been faithful over a few things, enter thou into the joy of thy Lord and I will make thee ruler of many things. Oh Lord! Thy will not mine be done. Funeral services were conducted from his late home in Morrow township by Rev. T. Lashley of Perrysville, Ohio, an intimate friend and former pastor, after which the body was laid in the Edwardsville cemetery on Saturday July 14. A very large concourse of relatives and friends following to the burial. Martin Whitacre was born in Harlan township near Morrow Warren County Ohio July 14 1814 and departed this life March 5, 1900 aged 85 years 7 months 19 days. He united in marriage with Mary Howard February 14, 1835, and she after a wedded life of fifty nine years died February 7, 1894. To this union were born ten boys and seven girls of which eleven are living today and six of whom have gone on before. He was converted in the school house at Osceola under the preaching of Rev. John Hisly of which he was a charter member of F. W. B. Church of Sugar Run about thirty years ago and lived a faithful member until death. After his conversion he always loved the old fashion prayer meeting and the old fashion hymns pleased him best. Bro Whitacre during his boy hood had not the privilege as his father died when he was a small child to obtain much of an education but he always loved to read the bible. He had a remarkable memory and could repeat many passages of Scripture. He was always guarded in his conversation and was very particular when he told anything to always give the author. During the last fifteen years of his life he suffered greatly with kidney trouble. He looked forward to the time when he would be free from all afflictions. He loved to talk of that sweet rest that remains for the finally faithful. He is greatly missed by his family friends and neighbors but their loss is his gain. His funeral took place last Wednesday at Sugar Run church Rev. George Hoover Officiating. Source: The Western Star 5 Mar 1900.
