Roosa, who with her daughter, Jeannette, were the sole survivors of the famous Roosa murder, died last Saturday afternoon at her home in Morrow, aged nearly 52 years. She had been confined to her bed for two weeks and was unconscious most of the time. Her disease was first pronounced to by typhoid fever, but was afterward changed to nervous prostration. After the funeral at Morrow, on Monday, the remains were brought here and laid in the vault of the Lebanon Cemetery. The death of Mrs. Roosa recalls the horrible murder committed on the night of December 26, 1864, nearly twenty years ago at the residence of her husband, John W. Roosa, one mile from Deerfield. The names of those killed are giving in the Warren County History as follows: The occupants of the Roosa house on the fatal night were Mrs. Roosa, three young daughters, an infant at the breast and an old man hired upon the farm, named Jesse Couzens. Alice Belle, aged fifteen; Francis, a younger sister; the infant by its mother’s side and Jesse Couzens were all killed with the same hatchet, and Mrs. Roosa with her head horribly gashed was left for dead by the Murderer. Little Jeannette, aged about seven years, was the only person in the house unhurt, and to-day is the sole survivor of one of the most cold-blooded and fiendish murders ever perpetrated in any community. She escaped with her life by hiding under the bed. Mrs. Roosa was found with many marks of the murderer’s hatchet and from her face the blood had spurted to the ceiling. Serious as were her wounds, she finally recovered. John W. Roosa was at this time an inmate of the Asylum at Dayton, were he had voluntarily gone on account of monthly attacks of lunacy, in the intervals of which he was sane. Sometime after the execution of Samuel Coovert on the 24th of August, 1866, who was twice convicted of the murder, Mr. Roosa returned from the Asylum and lived with his wife but a short time when he drifted to the far West. He is now engaged in farming in Dakota. Two children survive Mrs. Roosa, Jeannette and a daughter sixteen or seventeen years of age, born since the tragedy. Some persons who have professed to believe there was a secret connected with the murder expected Mrs. Roosa to make a death bed confession in which some startling revelation would be made, but they were disappointed. She left no statement whatever, and if there ever was any secret concerning the awful affair, it will be buried with her. Early Tuesday morning death released the spirit of Harlan Sawyer aged 63, at his late residence in the Decker Hotel, and his long years of suffering came to an end. He had been an invalid for the past twenty years and for ten he has been unable to walk. Until a few months ago he was patiently cared for by his faithful wife but the strain was too much and she preceded him to the Beyond. Since then friends have ministered to his needs. During all these years of suffering he has shown indomitable courage and wonderful patience, always appearing cheerful and jovial. Funeral services for the deceased will be held at the First Presbyterian Church this (Thursday) afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. Interment will be made in Lebanon Cemetery. For several years he had been declining in health, his last illness being of a few weeks’ duration. Mr. Hudson will be well remembered by the older residents of this locality. He was born and reared a short distance south of Blanchester. In his early life he operated a livery stable at Morrow, and later on in Blanchester. He was for many years prominent in Republican politics in this section of Ohio. Many persons will probably remember his best as the owner of the famous race horse, Highland Queen. A son, Ralph, served for 20 years in the navy and preceded his father in death two years ago. The Hudsons moved to California in 1914, where he again served as postmaster at Perris until 1928. Mr. and Mrs. Hudson last visited in this community three years ago this summer, renewing old acquaintances in this section at the time. Surviving besides the widow, Mrs. Blanche Hudson, are a sister, Mrs. Mary F. Hutchinson, of San Diego, Calif.; three nieces, all living in California; and three nephews, Howard G. Hudson, of Wilmington; John Hudson, Jr., of Madisonville, and Elbridge L. Hudson, of Madiera. Funeral services were held at Perris, Calif., on Friday Morning with interment at that place. HANNAH SIMONTON PASSES AWAY Hannah Stokes Simonton, twelfth and youngest child of William and Hannah Hatcher Stokes was born on the Stokes homestead four miles northeast Lebanon on the 6th day of January, 1823, and after a brief illness of three days, died at 214 North Mechanic Street, where she has resided continuously for sixty years, at 5 o'clock Saturday morning, August 27th, aged 87 years, 7 months and 21 days, thus outliving and having lived a longer life than any of her brothers or sisters. She was married at the Stokes homestead on Wednesday, September 15th, 1841, to John Simonton, a devoted husband, with whom she lived happily until January 15th, 1888, when he preceded her into the Heavenly Country. She was the mother of five children, three sons and two daughters. The eldest son, Hiram, and the two daughters, Mary and Lucy have passed over before her, while two sons, Leonidas and William remain. In company with her husband she united with the East Baptist church Lebanon on March 14, 1853, under the pastorate of Rev. Harvey Dale and her life ever since has been a remarkably exemplary, consistent Christian one. From her mother, who was a member of the Society of Friends and who wore attire up to the time of her death at the age of 83, she inherited a great many traits of the Quaker character. Clearcut and positive in her convictions of duty, she would have lost her right hand sooner than do what she believed wrong. Her affections were for her family, her home and her Church and departing as she has in the fullness of years, she had left behind to the surviving sons, a blessed, hallowed memory. 'Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them." Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Arthur Cooper Tuesday afternoon at the late home. Interment in Lebanon cemetery.
