The name of the newspaper is not shown, but is most likely the Chillicothe, Ohio "Gazette", or the Greendfield, Ohio "Greenfield Daily Times". RITES TODAY FOR ALEX SPURGEON AT SOUTH SALEM. SOUTH SALEM - Rev. Ronald Green of Columbus and Rev. H. F. Miller officiated at last rites for Alexander Spurgeon, 82, at the Methodist church here at 2 p.m. today. Interment was made in the local cemetery by the Murray Co. of Greenfield. Mr. Spurgeon died at 5 a.m. Saturday at his home in Lower Twin community after a lingering illness of several months. He was widely known in this section of Ross county where he spent most of his life. Surviving are the widow; one son, Lafayette at home, and four daughters, Mrs. Harold Hester, Mrs. Harriett Benson, Mrs. Glenn Ryan and Mrs. Cora Hoffman. Additional Comments: The following obituary is from an ordinary typed piece of paper, probably typed for the church services. The spelling is just as it is written in the document. "Obituary of Alexandria Spurgeon: Alex died at his home Nov. 12, 1938 at 82 years of age 5 mounths 1 day. He was born in Fayette County June 11th 1859. He was the son of James and Sarah Ellen Spurgeon. He was united in marriage to Lillie May Levey April 17th 1892. He lives his widow Mrs. Lillie May Spurgeon and 4 daughter and one son Mrs Charles Benson Lyndon and Mrs Ralph Hoffman Bainbridge, and Mrs. Glenn Ryan and Mrs. Harold Hester both of Lyndon and Lafayette at home. He also leaves one sister Mrs. Rachel McEdward of Greenfield and also 21 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was a good and loving Husband and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Theres another bright light in Heaven, Joined in the angel band, Theres one more released from suffering, Here in the shadow land. Oh loved ones why should you sorrow, Oh loved ones do not show grief, When you know he can never more borrow, The sufferings beyond relief. For in the garden of Gethsemane, Chirst knelt on his altar of stone, And prayed to his Father in heaven, For the sins which he must atone. He asked if it be possible, The bitter chalice of dregs to withold. And even in anguish and sorrow, His spirit was all fine and gold. He conquered and Lo! The victory was won, He said Father Not mine was won, But thy will be done, Eternal Faith and Eternal Love, Twin Lamps to our feet of Clay, May Gods Mercy grant that why walk Dear One, with you on your Dawning Day."
