Mr. Hughes came to Van Wert county in 1848. He was a brick mason by trade and laid the first brick in Van Wert county. Later he purchased a farm in York township, where a family of ten children were reared. His children are leading citizens in their own respective localities. Mr. Hughes enjoyed the friendship of his fellow men and was on several occasions honored with positions of trust, acting as township trustee, land appraiser and assessor. He was a member of the Calvinistic Church, of which he was treasurer for almost twenty-five years. The funeral service will be held at the home this morning at 10 o’clock. With the passing away of Thomas Hughes, of York township, another old pioneer has gone to his eternal rest. Uncle Tommy, as he was familiarly called, was one of our oldest settlers and his history, is the history of this community. To the younger generation, to listen to his anecdotes of earlier days, it sounded like chapters from some books of adventures, but it was history of pioneer days. May he rest in peace. He labored long and hard and his repose is well earned.
