A. ARMSTRONG, an old citizen of the county, and County Treasurer. He died about 6 o’clock on Sunday morning last. Heart trouble was the more immediate cause of death, though there seemed to be a complication of diseases, the lungs being affected and the kidneys. He was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, February 26th, 1827, and was 54 years old at his death. He came to Allen county with his father General William Armstrong, in the fall of 1840. He went to California in 1849, by the overland route, where he remained two years. He was married twice, his first wife being a sister of Mrs. N. A. Smith, and T. T. Mitchell; his second wife is a daughter of the late Judge T. M. Robb. He was elected County Treasurer in the fall of 1879, and assumed the duties of the office last September, serving just about nine months. He leaves a wife and five young children. The funeral was held from the West Market Street Presbyterian Church, at 2 p.m., on Tuesday last. He was buried in the old cemetery. NEFF JOHN G. NEFF died at his residence in German township on Saturday last, aged 65 years. He has lived for a number of years in this county, being one of the old settlers. He leaves a large number of relations and friends to mourn his departure. He was buried on Sunday afternoon last, the funeral being very largely attended. His family are all grown up and are esteemed citizens of our city and county. He was a kind neighbor and a man respected and liked by all who came in contact with him. Mr. Crites was one among the best known and most respected of the pioneer settlers of Allen county. He was born in Heidleburg county, Penn., October 27th, 1808. On the 17th of April, 1837, he came to Cedar Hill, Ohio, and on the 21st of June 1838, he was married to Mary Crites of that place, and with his wife moved in 1846 to Putnam county, O., whence in March, 1851, he came to Allen county. He retained, until he had passed his three score years and ten, almost the strength and vigor of his early manhood, when suddenly in October 1880, he was stricken down by a disease which baffled the knowledge of his physicians and confined him to his room and bed. He leaves a wife and seven children. The funeral services took place at the Bethel, the services conducted by Rev. Early, of Christian Union, and the remains of the deceased were interred in the new cemetery at Elida. C. HURLBURT , Drops Dead While Transacting Business. On Saturday afternoon last, at about 4 o’clock, a customer called at the carriage establishment of Hurlburt & Bowers, on East Market street, to get some washers. The senior member of the firm, Mr. Hurlburt, waited upon him, and as he handed him the washers he remarked that he felt badly, and when the customer turned to go Mr. H. called to him to catch him as he was about to fall. The gentleman assisted him to a chair, when he immediately expired. Heart disease was the immediate cause of death. He leaves a wife and one son to mourn his departure, and a large number of old, well known friends. He was about 65 years old, and these years were well spent in successful business undertakings. The deceased was born in Fairfield county, this state, and removed to this county at an early day. During his long residence on his farm near Gomer, and latterly in this place, he was greatly esteemed. At age 18 years he connected himself with the M. E. church, of which he remained an exemplary member until his death. His wife preceded him across the dark river about six years ago. The members of the family to mourn their great loss are H. B. Bussert, Mrs. A. Ludwig, Mrs. Seymour Evans, Mrs. H. Folk and Mrs. Frank Roebuck. The funeral will take place from M. E. church to-day, Thursday, at 4 o’clock, p.m., Rev. L. C. Webster officiating. VANATTA ED. VANATTA died at the residence of his parents, on East Market street on last Sunday morning. For several months past he has been confined to the house with the trouble that caused his death. He was wounded in the head during the past winter, by a blow from a billiard cue, and after lingering through the summer passed over the river. Mr. Vanatta was a young man who had a large circle of friends in Lima and had a warm heart for those who were in trouble or sorrow. He was buried on Tuesday at Woodlawn. He was born in Shelby county, Ohio, on February 23rd, 1821, and died November 12th, 1881. In 1845 he was married to Miss Mary Jane Williams, at Richwood, Ohio, and they resided in Logansville, until the spring 1851, when they removed to this place. They have had six children, two of whom have preceded their father in death. He engaged in store keeping when he first came here. Along in the 60’s he disposed of his store and engaged in banking, going in with B. C. Faurot, and the late Mr. Hackedorn, organizing a bank under the name of “The National Bank,” now the Allen County Bank. He retired from this bank and went to Wapakoneta and established a bank there, of which he was cashier. After passing several years there he returned here and helped organize the First National Bank. After retiring from that position he accepted the position of Deputy Auditor under S. D. Chambers, which position he filled until taken with his final illness. The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon, from the Trinity M. E. Church, by the Knights Templar, of which order he was a bright member. The grave is in Woodlawn Cemetery.
