Professor Parsons had returned just before noon from a trip to the Pacific coast which he had taken in company with President John W. Hoffman of the university. He declared to friends who met him at the railway station that he was feeling fine but complained of a slight cold. His daughtr, Miss Helen M. Parsons was unable to wake her father when she called him for lunch at their home early this afternoon. A physician was called who stated that Prof. Parsons' death had resulted from a stroke of apoplexy. Prof Parsons had gone to bed seemingly immediately upon his return to his house this morning and was stricken presumably after that time. Prof. Parsons had for some time desired to take a trip to the west coast and to see many of his Ohio Wesleyan friends of earlier years who now reside there. Immediately after Christmas this year the desire was realized when President Hoffman and Professor Parsons went to California to call upon various alumni of the university in behalf of the development program. It was from this trip that he had returned only a short time before death. Professor Parsons was born at Moate, Ireland June 25, 1847 and thousands of Ohio Wesleyan and Delaware people knew him for his genuine and sparkling Irish wit. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan university in 1871 and the degree of Doctor of Literature in 1921. Professor Parsons was superintendent of schools at Plymouth, OH from 1871 to 1875. In 1871 he was married to Eusebia M. Larason of Delaware. He had been connected with the faculty of Ohio Wesleyan university for fifty years and was active in its behalf until the very day of his death. He first returned to the university as Tutor in Ancient Languages in 1875. He was made principal of the Normal Department in 1878 and continued in this capacity for four years. He became adjunct professor of history in 1882 and Professor of Greek in 1884. He was made an emeritus professor in 1920 but his activity in behalf of the university did not cease for during the past three years he has been actively engaged in raising money for the university's present campaign and has called upon hundreds of alumni throught many states from coast to coast. Professor Parsons was the last of a group of older faculty men at Ohio Wesleyan and was one of the most beloved men connected with the university. Familiary known as "Dickey" he was probably an acquaintance of a large numer of alumni than any other faculty member. Professor Parsons had studied at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, Greece in 1893-4. He belonged to many learned societies and had written considerably having been a contributor at one time to well known publications as the Independent and The Nation. Professor Parsons had been very active in community affairs in the city and had been a member of the city council for many years. He ceased to sit in the council but a few weeks ago having declined to stand for re-election at the last city election. Surviving are six children: Helen at home, Margaret, Cleveland, Harry, Cleveland, Grace, McConnellsville, Arthur, Michigan City, Ind., Robert, Cleveland. Additional Comments: Richard was the son of Richard Parsons and Margaret Payne who emigrated from Ireland in 1848 to Zanesville, Ohio and lived there many years. Additional Comments: The following article is from an undated and unnamed newspaper clipping, but, given the age of N.D. Hoffman as listed in the clipping, the date of the clipping must have been about 1938. "FIRE DESTROYS KENNEDY HOME ON SLATE HILL. Believed to have originated from a defective flue, fire completely destroyed the five-room house of Mr. and Mrs. Hile Kennedy, near Slate Hill, and burned a large part of the contents, yesterday. W. N. Kennedy of Salinas, Calif., visiting with his son after being on the west coast for 16 years, suffered a loss of $500 in travelers' checks, $200 in postal saving certificates, and his return ticket. The elder Kennedy had taken $100 in cash with him when he left the house shortly before the fire. The structure - the ancestral home of Mrs. Kennedy's family and said to be more than 100 years old - was completely razed. The loss was not covered by insurance, according to reports. Neither Mr. nor Mrs. Hile Kennedy was at home at the time. When Miss Blanche Hoffman, a sister of Mrs. Kennedy, and N. D. Hoffman, 77, her father, discovered the blaze, the upper part of the house was in flames. They were able to remove a radio, a suit of clothing, some bedding, and a few pieces of furniture. Neighbors aided in saving sheds and barns near the burning structure. Hile Kennedy was in Greenfield; Mrs. Kennedy in Chillicothe where she is employed as a teacher in the WPA nursery school. Their daughter, Margaret, was at school in South Salem. The family will stay for the present at the home of Mr. Hoffman's brother-in-law, on the Jacob Taylor farm." Under the program, the government would take land that they owned, build a house upon it, and then sell it to a local person for $2500, with payments of $125.00 a year for 33 years. The program was designed to buildup the local and national economy by creating jobs and cheap available housing. Bob, as a worker on the govenment project, knew when a new farm was going to become available. By talking with the people in charge of the program, he also learned how to apply for one. Therefore, at the first opportunity, Bob applied for a farm, and his application went through without a hitch. He got his farm. Since it turned out to be so easy to get a farm, Bob also helped Bill Cokonougher, Howard Cokonougher's uncle, put in his application. It also went through quickly and easily. Bill, like everyone else, paid $125.00 a year for 33 years, with a purchase price of $2500.00. At the same time as the farm purchase program was being implemented, the government also started up the Land Bank farm conservation program. Under this program, the government paid farmers for letting their land lay fallow instead of farming it. Bill signed up. As it turned out, Bill ended up, after all was said and done, paying $125.00 a year to the U.S. government to buy a farm that he was being paid $150.00 a year by the same government not to farm. That worked out to $25.00 a year profit, not to mention free housing too! Barbara Hester Expires In Columbus Hospital. Funeral service was held Wednesday, 2 p.m., at South Salem Methodist church, the Rev. C. R. Lyle officiating, for Barbara Ann Hester, 16 months, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold D. Hester, Lyndon, Route 1, who died Monday in Children's hospital, Columbus of pneumonia which developed after she drank kerosene Sunday at the residence. Burial was in South Salem cemetery by Murray Co., Greenfield. A sister of the baby was preparing to start a fire in the kitchen stove when the incident occurred, members of the family said. While the older girl was locating a match, the child picked up a small container of kerosene left within her reach and swallowed a quantity of the liquid. The child was first taken to Hillsboro hospital for treatment and then was returned home. When her condition became worse, a Greenfield physician ordered her to the Columbus hospital where she was placed under an oxygen tent in an attempt to ward off the pneumonia which had developed. Additional Comments: The following obituary of Barbara Hester is from a typed page handed down in the family. The page looks like those that were read at funerals of the era. Barbara was born Jan. 25, 1943 in Ross County, Ohio and died May 15, 1944 in a Columbus, Ohio hospital. Obituary. On Jan. 25 1943 God the Heavenly Father sent into the home of Harold and Nora Ellen Hester a daughter whom they named Barbara Ann. A little more than a year before the birth of this little one an infant brother, Harold Dwight had been called by the Angel of Death. In the home are left the father and mother; five daughters and one son: Viola May, Martha Ellen, Dorothy Marie, Mary Catharine, Elizabeth Jane and Lawrence Elmer. To this family who loved her with such devotion, little Barbara Ann was lent awhile and then God in His Wisdom called her home to be with Him. In a garden of lovely blossoms, One rosebud pure and white, Still fresh with the dew of morning Had opened in the night. We watched our precious treasure Unfolding day by day; But the Gardener walked in the dawning And took our bud away, To bloom with Him in Heaven Safe from sin and blight; There is no need of the sun there, Where never comes the night.
