BRICE HOME – The Remains of H. L. Brice to be Brought. Will Arrive in Lima Tomorrow. Friends of Deceased Shocked by the Unexpected Death. Was One of the Most Able Attorneys Belonging to the Allen County Bar, as Was Prominent Socially. The brief announcement made by the Times-Democrat last evening of the sad death of Herbert L. Brice, which occurred at Flint, Mich., was a sudden and unexpected shock to his wide circle of friends in both social and professional affairs. It was generally known that the condition of his health had occasioned considerable apprehension among his immediate friends and relatives at the time he went to the sanitarium last fall but recent reports concerning his condition were of an encouraging nature and all were hopeful of his recovery. The deceased’s brother, Jonathan K. Brice, left for Flint, Mich., last evening and will take charge of the remains, with which he will return to this city some time tomorrow. Arrangements for the funeral will not be completed until after the arrival of the remains. Herbert L. Brice was born at the old Brice homestead near Columbus Grove, and was the youngest son of the Rev. William Kirkpatrick Brice and Clementine Cunningham Brice. He came to Lima in the early days of his boyhood and attended the public schools of this city. After completing his common school education, he went to Princeton and graduated from that institution in 1887. Returning to this city from college he read law for a year in the office of attorney S. S. Wheeler, and a year later entered the Columbia law school, in New York. He was admitted to the practice of law in 1889, and in July of that year, formed a partnership with S. S. Wheeler. He was engaged in active practice from 1889 until his failing health forced him to seek recreation and give up his profession in the fall of 1901. He was one of the most able members of the Allen county bar, and was equally prominent in social life, being a leading member of both the local lodge of the B. P. O. E. and of the Lima club. He was also a life member of both the Hospital society and the Library association and no one was more active than he in securing those two magnificent institutions for Lima. For a number of years he was president of the Northern Ohio railroad company, prior to the absorption of the L. E. & W. systems by the Vanderbilt interests. Mr. Brice was constantly ambitious, energetic and industrious and after the death of his half-brother, the late ex- senator Calvin S. Brice, he assumed much of the responsibilities of the latter’s extensive interests. His responsibilities increased with the death of Mrs. Brice, and the constant attention he devoted to the affairs of the family, doubtless hastened the breaking of his own health that resulted in his death on May 23, 1902, at the Oak Grove sanitarium in Flint, Mich. He is survived by his venerable mother, Mrs. C. C. Brice, of west Market street, one brother, Jonathan K. Brice, of north Baxter street; and two sisters, Mrs. O. B. Selfridge, of west Market street, this city and Mrs. Edwards Ritchie, of Wyoming, O. Mr. Kirk Brice and Miss Helen Brice, nephew and niece of the deceased, will arrive here from New York tomorrow morning. HALL, 85, pioneer Allen-co resident and Civil war veteran, died June 6th at his home due to heart disease. Dr. HALL had been in poor health for several months, but his condition had been serious for the past week. He was active in his profession as a dentist until last March. Dr. HALL was born in Davenport, Ia., May 24, 1842, the son of HARRISON AND ANNA HALL. The family moved to Lima in 1863. His father was one of the pioneer contractors and real estate dealers of Lima. In 1868 he erected what is now the east part of the Lima House and many of the prominent buildings of that period were erected by him. GEORGE HALL attended the public schools of Davenport and later attended Cornell college at Mt. Vernon, Ia., where he studied medicine and dentistry, with the intention of devoting his life to dentistry. His plans were interrupted by the outbreak of the Civil war, and in April 1861 he enlisted as a member of the Iowa volunteer infantry. He took part in the siege of Atlanta, where on July 22, 1864, HALL was captured by the Confederates. He was confined in Andersonville and Florence prisons, enduring all the hardships and sufferings for which those prisons became notorious, but on Feb. 22, 1865 he escaped from Florence and rejoined his regiment. He received his final discharge in July, 1865, after honorable service of more than four years. After leaving the army, HALL came to Lima and worked with his father in the business of contracting and building until 1867 at which time he formed a partnership with Dr. C. W. SWISHER and engaged in dentistry. Dr. HALL for many years was prominent in local public affairs, serving ten years as postmaster of Lima under the administrations of Presidents HARRISON AND MCKINLEY. He also served four years on the city council, part of that time as president. On Oct. 13, 1870, Dr. HALL was married to VIRGINIA HACKEDORN, who survives him. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. D. A. MCCOMB, Toledo and two brothers, W. H., Detroit and E. E., Toledo. The services were conducted by the pastor and warm personal friend of the deceased, Rev. BROSSART. Appropriate music was furnished by the choir. Floral tributes magnificent in design and execution and many in number were sent by the various organizations with which the deceased had been identified and by personal friends of the deceased and of the family. At the conclusion of the ceremonies, the remains were taken to Woodlawn and consigned to their final rest in the presence of a vast concourse of sorrowing friends. Among those from a distance who came to attend the obsequies were the following: General and Mrs. ORR, of Piqua; Dr. and Mrs. A. J. IRWIN, of Port Huron, Michigan; W. K. BRICE, a nephew of New York City; JOSHUA MOTTER, a brother of St. Joseph, Missouri, and JOSEPH MOTTER, a brother, of Williamsport, Maryland. >From the Bar Association Memorial: Mr. MOTTER was born at Williamsport, in the state of Maryland, and often did he mention that famed state in endearing terms. He was educated at Roanoke College, Virginia, where he graduated with high honors. He immediately took up the study of law, and about two years hence was admitted to practice in the State of Maryland. In that year, 1881, he came to Lima and was admitted to practice in this state, upon examination before the Supreme Court. Soon thereafter, he entered into a partnership in the practice of law with the Honorable WILLIAM L. MACKENZIE, under the firm name of Motter & Mackenzie. A few years ago Mr. JAMES WEADOCK was admitted into the firm, and thereafter the firm was known as Motter, Mackenzie & Weadock. Mr. MOTTER was elected Prosecuting attorney of Allen County in the fall of 1887, and served in that official position with honor and dignity for two successive terms, a period of six years. As a scholar he was renowned in the community, and as a citizen his life and character were exemplary. He was high minded and effective in his many duties, his every act tending to the upbuilding of the community in which he lived. Without a dissenting voice the community would join in saying that ISAAC S. MOTTER was a noble citizen. He was an ardent churchman, and believed in his religion, and acted it. He was an ardent and an industrious lawyer. He always had the interests of his clients at heart, and he served them faithfully, but it was beneath his high standard of his chosen profession to resort to questionable means or practice. No one doubted his word either as a citizen or a lawyer. His professional statements went unchallenged; no shame, deceit or hypocrisies in his make-up. His every act was an open book. His convictions he did not conceal, and wrong he did not hesitate to condemn. He was fearless, but fair, and considerate of the rights of others. ISAAC MOTTER died suddenly and unexpectedly on March 21, 1907. Richie. Business Houses Close; Hundreds Attend Last Sad Rites at Church. Services Beautiful and Impressive—Knights of Pythias in Charge. Walter B. Richie, who died April 2, was one of Lima’s best known citizens and philanthropists. Hundreds of persons attended the funeral at the Market Street Presbyterian church this afternoon, many being unable to gain admission to the building. The church was crowded with lifelong friends of the deceased, business acquaintances, and many whom he had at one time or another helped during his life. Rev. THOMAS KNOX, pastor of the Market Street Presbyterian church, recited the opening prayer, and the sermon was delivered by Rev. DAVID JONES, of Evanston, Ill., former pastor of the Market Street church, and a very close friend of the deceased. The honorary pallbearers were: Judge M. L. BECKER, Dr. J. P. VAIL, O. B. SELFRIDGE, S. S. WHEELER, R. L. BATES AND D. J. CABLE. The active pallbearers were: H. O. BENTLEY, D. W. MORRIS, FRANK C. CUNNINGHAM, WILLIAM BLACKBURN AND CLARENCE MILLER. Following the impressive and solemn services at the church, the funeral cortege wended its way to Woodlawn cemetery, where the body was placed in a temporary vault for ten days, after which it will be consigned to the grave in the family lot at the cemetery.
