[Husband of Lucy nee HENRY] 1845 to 13 Jan 1896 50 years 7 months John Blackburn died at his home two miles east of the village Monday forenoon [13 Jan 1896] after an illness of little more than three weeks. The deceased moved to Canfield eight years ago, was one of the best known and most progressive farmers of the Township. Through his many excellent qualities of mind and heart he had endeared himself to a wide circle of friends. He was a member of the Township Board of Education and was untiring in his efforts to advance the cause of education. Mr. Blackburn was born in Poland Township in 1845 and was therefore in the 51st year of his age. He was united in marriage with Miss Lucy Henry in 1873. The result of this union was three children – two sons and a daughter – who, with his wife, survive him. Funeral services held Wednesday morning [15 Jan 1886] at the family residence were conducted by Rev. J.A. Wright. The interment was made in the village cemetery. Additional Comments: At the time of his death his home was what is today known as Loghurst. BURIAL Canfield Township Cemetery and Death Records, Mahoning County, Ohio, 1983, ps 22, 80, 90, 100 John R. Blackburn was buried on 15 Jan 1886 in the NW corner, by road, beside Sanzenbacher Mausoleum, in Canfield Village Cemetery, Canfield, Mahoning Co. OH Comment: Jennifer Neff, 14 May 2005 He is listed under both John and John R. The entry on p 80 says that he was buried on 17 Apr 1908. This appears to be incorrect. Mrs. Elijah Bond 20 Dec 1804 to 6 Jan 1895 90y 17d Death of Mrs. Orpha Bond A happy meeting soon followed by a sorrowful parting. Nearly three weeks ago quite a number of the good people of the Congregational Church of Canfield, together with many elderly acquaintances and the surviving children of Mrs. Orpha Bond gave her a happy surprise at her residence in this place, to offer their congratulations and good cheer on the occasion of her 90th birthday anniversary. She had been for some days absent visiting in Leetonia and had only arrived at her home a few minutes before her many friends burst upon her with their hearty good wishes that her happy days might be prolonged for many years. This good old lady received these congratulations graciously and joyfully, and seemed as happy as the happiest in the enjoyment of good health and a contented mind. How quickly our joys and sorrows alternate! A few days after this pleasant event, Mrs. Bond, while engaged in reading, was suddenly smitten with apoplexy and a few hours afterward the spirit that animated and gave such a charm to a long and useful life, passed away Jan. 6th, 1895. “Aunt Orpha,” as she was familiarly called, was born in Connecticut, Dec. 20th, 1804, being a daughter of Lovel Parker, who with his family came to Ohio in 1816, settling in Kinsman, Trumbull county, where in 1830, she was married to her first husband, James Truesdale, and very soon thereafter settled in Canfield, where her husband engaged in the manufacture of edged tools. The business was of great advantage to Canfield and surrounding towns; but as the fruits of the energy and enterprise of Mr. Truesdale developed into success, he became by reason of exposure and over exertion, a helpless invalid, and a few years thereafter died in 1845, or about 50 years ago. On the 2nd day of April, 1856, Mrs. Orpha Truesdale married Mr. Elijah Bond. Mr. Bond is remembered by very many of our people as a man of intelligence and great moral worth, highly respected by all who knew him. He lived to a serene old age, and died on the 3rd day of March, 1878. The fruits of this first marriage referred to, was the birth of seven children, but only three lived to maturity, Hannah, the oldest, married Frederick Harrington, at present treasurer of Ashtabula county. She died a number of years ago. James L. Truesdale of Leetonia , who is well and favorably known as a public spirited and enterprising gentleman; and Julia, who married Mr. Barker of Rock Creek, O., who is also a highly respected citizen. The funeral of deceased, which took place on Tuesday from the family residence, was largely attended by old acquaintances, friends and citizens. He leaves a wife, daughter and a large circle of warm friends to mourn his loss. Next week we will publish fuller particulars in regard to deceased. (in articles) Mahoning Dispatch, Fri, 15 Mar 1878 Death of an Old Citizen Died – At his residence in Canfield, on Sunday morning, March 3d, 1878, Elijah Bond, aged 82 years. Mr. Bond was born in Canterbury, Windham county, Connecticut, April 23d, 1796, consequently at the time of his death, lacked but a few weeks of being 82 years of age. At the age of 23, in the Spring of 1819, in company with his next younger brother, (Jonas Bond), he emigrated from his native State, arriving in Canfield May 23d, having walked the entire distance on foot. Soon after his arrival in this place he commenced working at his trade of wagon maker, and in addition for quite a number of years, made himself useful in repairing clocks and watches. In 1822, Mr. Bond returned to Connecticut, staying long enough to construct a carriage, such as was used at that early day, in which he in company with Jonas Bond’s wife, returned to Ohio again in the spring of 1823, Jonas following with team and goods. For quite a number of years Mr. Bond made his home at the old Cook Fitch tavern and with Eli T. Boughton. In 1839, he married Miss Jane Fitch, and about the same time erected the residence he occupied up to the time of his death. His first wife having died in 1854, he was married in 1856, to Mrs. Orpha Truesdale. He had by his first wife two children, one of whom died when quite young; the other, Miss Hattie, lived to comfort and minister to the last wants of her aged parent. Mr. Bond was ever remarkably regular and methodical in his habits – free from every form of excess and of wonderful evenness of temper. These habits and traits of mind, in connection with the naturally robust constitution, insured almost uninterrupted good health up to the last year or two previous to his death; never having been compelled to go to bed for a single day up to a few weeks prior to his death. The deceased, though not demonstrative or obtrusive in his religious or political views, nevertheless had decided and intelligent opinions of his own upon these subjects. When called upon to act or vote, it was done in the interests of morality and humanity. His funeral was largely attended by many of his old acquaintances, desirous of manifesting their sympathy and respect for the memory of a good man, among whom was Judge Newton, who, from his long acquaintance, was enabled to speak in terms of the greatest respect over the remains of his old friend and neighbor. Rev. John McLean spoke from a text fitly describing the deceased; “Mark the perfect man and behold the upright, for the end of that man is peace.” J. T.
