Before removing to Warren some years since the deceased resided a mile west of Smith's Corners in Austintown township. His age was about 65 years. He had suffered several strokes in recent years. Mr. Starr was born in Boardman township just a short distance from the Canfield township line on Sept. 24, 1851, celebrating his 89th birthday last fall. He was very active for his years and took a keen interest in affairs. As a young man he lived two miles east of Canfield, later moving to the residence he built at Starr Corners on the Boardman road. He was a farmer and was widely known throughout the county, retiring 28 years ago when the family built a home at Boardman. Mr. Starr could recall many interesting happenings of early days and stories of pioneer settlers. On Jan. 1, 1879, he married Miss Sara Moherman, who died in 1936. Surviving are two daughters, Misses Stella and Maud at home, and a son, Clifford, of Lancaster, Calif; also two grandchildren and one great- grandchild. Funeral services held from his home Monday afternoon [31 Mar 1941] were conducted by Rev. W. J. Hodder and burial made in Canfield cemetery. STARR DIED WEDNESDAY IN BOARDMAN Mrs. Sarah Moherman Starr, 84, wife of Henry N. Starr, died at 5:40 Wednesday morning [25 Aug 1936] at the family home in Boardman, following an illness of three months of heart trouble. Deceased was born in Austintown township Feb. 12, 1852, a daughter of pioneers Winchester and Samantha Moherman. She was married to Mr. Starr Jan 1, 1879, and the couple established a home in western Boardman township, leaving it some years ago for a new one in Boardman Center. When residing near Canfield she was a member of the Presbyterian church and one of the most active women in this work. After removal to Boardman she took her letter to the Methodist church, taking equal interest in its upbuilding. Quiet and unassuming, her lovable traits of character endeared her to a wide circle of friends. Besides her husband she leaves two daughters, Stella and Maude, at home, and a son, Clifford, and two grandsons, of Lancaster, Calif., and two sisters, Miss Maude Moherman and Mrs. W.W. Woodward, both of Youngstown. Funeral services will be held from the family home Saturday afternoon [28 Aug 1936] at 2 o’clock in charge of Dr. H.H. Scott, followed by burial in Canfield village cemetery. Mrs. Neff was born in Canfield Sept. 21, 1872, a daughter of Lucinda Corll and the late S.S. Porter and had spent her lifetime in this place Since girlhood she had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and had been actively identified with the Builders Aid society and Woman’s Missionary Society of that church. On June 21, 1898, she was united in marriage to Ensign Neff who survives with her mother, Mrs. Lucinda Porter. Mrs. Neff was a member of Parkview Rebecca lodge of the I.O.O.F. She was a woman highly regarded in this community. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday from the residence with Dr. J.M. Kendig and Rev. R.S. Smith officiating. Burial was made in Zion cemetery, north of Canfield. On August 11, 1870, he was married to Miss Lucinda Corll who, with one daughter, Mrs. E.E. Neff, survive him. He also leaves one brother, A.S. Porter. Funeral services in charge of Revs. J. M. Kendig and L.D. Williams will be held from the family home at 1:30 Saturday afternoon. Interment will be made in Zion Church cemetery, north of the village. She was long a member of Zion Reformed church, north of the village. One brother, Wallace Corll, survives. Funeral services held Wednesday afternoon from her late home were conducted by Revs. C. L. ALLEN KLINE DEAD Mrs. J. Allen Kline, 76 years of age, died last Friday morning at her home on the Crane street farm 2 ˝ miles south east of Canfield, following a protracted illness, the immediate cause of her death being cardiac asthma. For many weeks she had been unable to lie down, being forced to occupy a chair in upright position. This she did uncomplainingly to the end. She was born in Canfield Nov. 22, 1862. Before her marriage to Mr. Kline, March 17, 1887, she was Maude Mabel Canfield of Canfield, a daughter of Judson W., and Elizabeth Canfield. Her father for many years filled the office of county surveyor, or engineer. Her great-grandfather was Judson Canfield, one of the earliest settlers, for whom Canfield township was named. He came from Connecticut. With the exception of ten years spent with her husband on his ranch in Wyoming, all her life was passed in or near her native village. Besides her husband she leaves two daughters, Mrs. Marjory Bayne of Ten Sleep, Wyoming, and Mrs. Dorothy Anderson, at home; three brothers, Judson T. Canfield of Salem, Colden R. of Eau Claire, Wis., and Walter of Youngstown. Funeral services held in the Williams funeral home at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon were conducted by Rev. Geo. A. Gibson. Neff 101, of the Sleigh Bell Residence, formerly of 133 W. Main St., and onetime meat dealer, died of infirmities at 2:30 a.m. today at the Residence. Mr. Neff was born April 22, 1875, in Canfield Township, a son of John and Harriet Sanzenbacher Neff, members of a pioneer family which came to Canfield Township from Berks County, Pa., in 1802. Mr. Neff was the owner and operator of the Neff Wholesale and Retail Meat Market in Broad Street for about 60 years, retiring about 20 years ago. His market burned down in 1930 and reopened in 1931 in a new row of buildings on the same general site. He was a member of the Canfield United Methodist Church. His wife, the former Anna Fithian, whom he married in 1901, died in 1959. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Everett Bush of Boardman and Mrs. Armand Schnurrenberger of Austintown; a son, Martin J. Neff of Cleveland; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Neff ffen@zoominternet.net May 11, 2006, 12:01 am Mahoning Dispatch, Fri, 6 Nov 1959 NEFF, Anna nee Fithian [Mrs. Martin John Neff] 1876 to 1 Nov 1959 83y Mrs. Anna Neff, West Main street died of complications Sunday afternoon in the North Side unit of the Youngstown hospital. She had been ill two months. Born in Boardman township, she was a daughter of Joseph and Fannie Frankle Fithian, and had resided in Canfield since her marriage in 1901 to Martin J. Neff. Mrs. Neff was a member of the United Presbyterian church of Canfield; Mahoning Chapter, of the Daughters of the American Revolution; Canfield Court No. 39, Order of the Amaranth; the Garden Club of Canfield; the Thursday Afternoon Bridge Club, and the Women’s City Club of Youngstown. Besides her husband, she leaves two daughters, Mrs. Everett Bush of Youngstown and Mrs. Armand Schnurrenberger, Austintown township, a son, Martin J. Jr., at home; a sister, Mrs. Daniel Housley of Cleveland, two brothers, Dale and Arthur Fithian of Youngstown, six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services with the Rev. Charles F. Fulcumer officiating, were held Wednesday afternoon at the William Funeral Home, and burial made in Canfield cemetery. Burials - Canfield Twp. Cemetery & Death Records, Mahoning Co.
