COMMENT As told, in 2003, to Jennifer L. Neff by her father, Robert Neff [Jennifer and Robert are John Naff/Neff descendants] John Naff/Neff was born on 2 June 1796 in Northampton Co. [now Lehigh Co.] PA – known as the Heidelberg area and located about 15 miles NW of Allentown. His parents were Conrad and Magdalena Weaver/Weber Naff/Neff. Stress over the impending Civil War is believed to be the cause of John Neff’s relatively early death on 7 Apr 1861. He was just 64y 10m 5d. He greatly feared a war that would sever the United States and prayed for a peaceful resolution. Many of his neighbors were in favor of the war and this created much local tension. John’s fears were realized when the South seceded from the Union. The Civil War officially began just five days after his death. On 12 Apr 1861 Confederates fired on Ft. Sumter. Mrs. Neff has always enjoyed excellent health until within the past month or two, and been capable of caring for herself during her long and useful life, with the exception of the last two weeks. She was one of the pioneer residents of this county, and resided in Canfield about 60 years. She came to this county when only six years of age, with her parents, from Northampton Co., Pa., who settled on a farm in Youngstown 73 years ago. Her remains were followed to the Canfield German Reform Cemetery on last Sunday, by a very large concourse of relatives, friends and acquaintances. Burial: Old North Cemetery, Row 9 Location: 1 mile N of the Canfield Village Green SR 46 / US 62 on right (E) side of road. Canfield, Mahoning Co. OH 44406 Additional Comments: Comments Jennifer Neff, 2005: Mahoning Dispatch made its first publication on May 4, 1877 and Betsey died on July 7, 1877; therefore her obituary is one of the earliest in the Dispatch and is also one of the earliest in existence for the Neff family. I chose to use the Mahoning County Probate Court Death Record for Elizabeth Kline Neff's date of death. Her date of birth is calculated from date of death and age given at time of death. Probate Record for Neff, Elizabeth Died 6 July 1877 Age of 79y 9m 6d The Probate Record does need a major correction. A line that says “Occupation - Spinster” is incorrect. It should read “Widow”. Further explanation: The date of death and age at date of death varies within Canfield Township Cemetery and Death Records, Mahoning County, Ohio, 1983 p 8 says that she died on 7 July 1877 age of 79y 1m 6d p 96 says that she died on 6 July 1877 age of 79y 9m 6d - this matches Probate Record Her obituary states that she died on 7 July 1877.
