State Record A, Clerk of Courts, Warren County, Ohio (Court of Common Pleas): May Term 1806, The State of Ohio vs. George Carpenter: [excerpts] "The Grand Jurors for the County of Warren upon their oath present, that George Carpenter late of the Township of Wayne in the County aforesaid on the tenth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and five with force and arms at the township aforesaid in the county aforesaid one ax of the Value of two Dollars and fifty cents of the goods and chattels of one Burwell Good then and there being found feloniously did steal take and carry away against the peace and dignity of the State of Ohio and against the form of the statute of the same in succor made and provided. And the said George Carpenter being called come and hearing the said Indictment read saith he is not guilty thereof... And therefore came also a Jury...do say upon their oath that the said George Carpenter is Guilty... Whereupon it is considered by the court here that the said George Carpenter for the trespass and offence aforesaid in the Indictment aforesaid above Specified (which said George Carpenter being present here) is to receive on his naked back three stripes and also that he pay for the cost of this prosecution four Dollars and forty cents."
