Name of ship, crime convicted of, and other information may also be provided. Between Dec 6, 1776 and April 1777, he enlisted in the Revolutionary War, Sept 9, 1778, he was on the roll of Capt. Edward Oldham’s Company of the 4th Maryland Regiment, commanded by Col. Josias Carvill Hall, Esq. The time of his service was 3 years. He re-enlisted in the 6th Maryland Brigade, Commanded by Otho H. Williams, Esq., Col., Commandant from the 7th to the 23rd of February 1779. He was at Camp Middlebrook on Feb 24, 1779 and was probably mustered out then. He was paid $100 bounty for his Revolutionary War Service. William lived in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, in the vicinity of present Wilkes-Barre, and later in Towanda, Pennsylvania in the portion of Luzerne added into Branford County in 1812. Among Nora Frisbies notes is this: “ The Minutes of Supreme Executive Council for Pennsylvania (Harrisburg, 1853) note that on April 10, 1783, a passport was granted to William Frisby to proceed to New York by way of Dobbs Ferry and return. There is nothing to indicate where William lived, and there is no further mention of him.” Not much is known of William and Ruth and their family except that they lived in Lusern Co. Pa. Where the first five children were born, and later moved to Ohio, (about 1808) probably Morgan County, where they lived the rest of their lives. They are buried in Ohio, but the name of the cemetery is not known. The entire Frisbey family, moved from Wyoming Valley Pennsylvania and settled in the Morgan County Ohio area about 1808/12. The father, William Frisbey and his sons joined the Union Army during the Revolutionary war and participated in the War of 1812, they enlisted from Pennsylvania and were discharged same. Land grants were issued to veterans of this war, and it is probable that the Ohio frontier in Morgan County was the place the Frisbey’s settled first because of government grants. They settled in Washington, Athens and Morgan Counties Ohio. The time of this emigration is probably soon after the War of 1812. Some of them later moved 1842-44 moved from Ohio to Noble and LaGrange County Indiana. Others of the Frisby family moved to DeWitt and McClean Counties in Illinois where they purchased considerable amounts of land.” New research indicates the Walker family was quite possibly Quakers from the Radnor Township, in Chester County, Pennsylvania. (See Walkers of Radnor PA, chapter 12) According to Nora Frisby, noted Frisby researcher and author there is confusion within the family of researchers re: Jonathan FRISBY, who appears in the 1790 Census of Luzerne Co, PA with a household of 1-2-1. It is probably identical with the several Jonathan’s whose names appear in the annals of Pennsylvania and Ohio for the next 30 years. Children of Jonathan that have been identified are James, John, Ann and Ruth. Nora Frisbie also places Jonathan Frisbie born ca 1765; he remained in the Wyoming Valley, married, and had a large family. He later moved to Bradford County, PA and then to Morgan Co, OH where he died in 1821. She further states he is the son of James Frisbie #131 4IX-32-B who was born Branford Conn, 7-18-1722, bp 1722. He moved to Bethlehem, Conn, Ca 1763; is found in the annals of Wyoming Valley, PA periodically form 1760 – 1783. He died Bethlehem, 3-17-1814, age 92. He is thought to have served in the Revolutionary War; tours of duty are described in the discussion of previous pages. He married 1st Branford, 6-16-1743, Joanna Porter, daughter of Nathaniel Porter of Woodbury (Bethlehem parish), Date of her death is not known, but she was living in 1763, when she was received into the Bethlehem Church. 3 Children and perhaps others: 15758 Walter, 14946 James and Jonathan b ca 1765. James Frisbie married 2nd prob 3-13-1772 Clamis Darin; she later emigrated to Poultney VT and died there 7-28-1828. Four (4) children were born to them and perhaps others: Son, over 16 in 1790 census, 2 daughters listed in 1790 census, and son James, b 1783; he later settled in Tinmouth, VT, married and had a large family. The 1800 census for Luzerne County has no Frisbie listings. The 1810 census shows a Jonathan living in Towanda Twp., Lucerne Co, PA. The historical records of Branford County, mentions a “Jonathan Frisbie living At Eilenberger Springs originally known as Frisbie Springs near Towanda; about 1815 he sold and went west. He had a large family and emigrated to Ohio.” The 1820 census for Morgan Co, OH lists a Jonathan Frisby. The will of a Jonathan Frisby was probate in Morgan Co, in 1821; wife spelled the name Frisbey. Between the years 1808 – 1820 the Frisbey migration from Branford Co, Ct (Pa whichever) included, Jonathan and his family and William and his family. By 1830 the census records show a Joseph in Bern, Athens Co., OH. George, James 1 and 2) all in Bloom, Morgan, OH. One researcher stated that the original name was Jonathan Carey Frisby and that he was born in Germany and his wife in England, but this information is at variance with the known facts. Note: In Morgan 6 Sep 1820, mentions his wife Sarah; daughter Ann; his wife and four young boys are to live on the land. The land was purchased from Eli Walls. Wm. Montgomery was a witness. It is not known whom Jonathan was, brother of George Pack, or perhaps brother of William Frisbey or not related at all. That he chose to live in the same areas as our Frisbey family, it is probable that he is a close relative. In the Morgan County OH. Will Book O, there is a Jonathan FRISBEY dated 6 Sep 1820. Mentions wife Sarah; daughter Ann; wife and 4 young boys to live on the Land. Land from Eli Walls. Wife Sarah and Wm. Silvey executors, Wit.: James Sloan or Stones and Wm. Montgomery. Children are: John Frisbie, born before 1790 in PA, married and remained in Pennsylvania. James Frisbie b Pennsylvania ca. 1786 and Ann Frisbie probably b Pennsylvania, post 1790, married in Ohio, James EVELAND. Jonathan Frisby died post 1820 in Morgan Co., OH. There is still a controversy among the Frisbey family researchers as of this date. Some think Jonathan (Jonathin)and William Frisbey are the same person. Census records of 1790 and early 1800’s tend to disprove this. Further the IGI (International Genealogical Index) of the LDS Church shows in Pennsylvania: Johnathan married Sarah (last name unknown in 1780 in Luzerne Co, Pa and the following children born to Jonathin and Sarah Frisbey – James E. born 1786, Luzerne, PA John b 1790, Luzerne, PA Ann b 1800, Luzerne, PA Ruth Sarah’s own child by a previous marriage This same record shows William Frisbey md Ruth Walker 1785 Luzerne Co, had the following children: James b 1787, George Pack born 1804, John born 8 Jul 1789, Joseph born 19 Sep 1793, Walker born 1806, There are two Frisbey men, one named Jonathon and one named William on the records and we do not need to continue to confuse the issue. Climpson for continuance of the war. Discharged 15 Oct 1814 at Easton, PA. John filed similar affidavits in 1851 and 1852 at LaGrange, LaGrange Co; Ind. Stating he was in actual service two months lacking five days and was honorably discharged because of illness. He therewith made application for bounty land to which he might be entitled according to an act passed 28 Sep 1850, granting land to those in military service. John Frisbey signed affidavits, X his mark. Jan 1853, the Auditory Office claimed No service record could be found in the case of John Frisbey, Pa. Mil service. John emigrated from Lusern Co., PA prior to 1817 and moved to Ohio where he married Mary Ann VanClief. In the fall of 1842, they moved to Swan Twp., Noble Co, Indiana and in April of 1844 to Clay Twp, LaGrange Co, Indiana. In 1845 they moved again to Lima Twp and later back to Clay. John moved around quite a lot in his lifetime, clearing land and farming it. In the year 1846 John Frisbey was the owner of 80 acres of land in Lima Twp, Indiana. John was remembered as an austere type of man and very stern in discipline of his children, believing in the old adage ‘spare the rod and spoil the child’. His boys were full of life and fun, Peter especially, who liked to play jokes on whomever he could. Ruth seemed to be her father’s favorite, not always sticking to the exact way of things, which often got Peter into trouble with his father. She sometimes enlarged on the matter with Peter getting more punishment than he deserved. Mary Ann was a kind and loving mother and devoted to her family, she was almost idolized by her children, and sometimes lightened the punishment of the father with comfort and love. 3. He married Sarah Ann BYRAM 19 Mar 1829 in Roxbury Twp, Washington Co., OH. (Washington Co later became Morgan Co OH.) They lived in Zanesville Ohio where he served as Justice of The Peace and operated a ferry over the Muskingum River. Deeds in Roxbury Twp, Morgan County OH. under the name of George P and Sarah A FRISBEY indicate they bought 100 acres from Samuel B. Knott for $250. and later owned 100 acres which they sold to John Bartlett, and James Harper for a total of $500. A deed dated 1837 in Marietta, Ohio is shown below: George would have been 34 years of age at the time of this transaction. Illinois was a hotbed of activity during the years 1840-1870.  The Mormons had settled in Nauvoo IL in 1838, The City was larger than Chicago by population when in 1844 Joseph Smith JR their leader was assassinated in Carthage Illinois by a mob. Many of the Mormons fled the state and in 1848 arrived in Utah. Meanwhile, several groups of previous followers organized into new churchs and a large group settled in the Springfield area.  Slavery was a big issue and the Underground Railroad swept through Illinois, with a large group of ‘conductors’ in the Springfield area. Abraham Lincoln was lawyering in Springfield, and defended some that were prosecuted for aiding runaway slaves. The United States were divided over the issue of Slavery and the Civil War was brewing.  Land grants were available to those who had served in previous war campaigns, and many took advantage of this and began settling in Illinois as well.  The Gold Rush of 1848 brought fortune seekers through the area. Into this mix, George Pack Frisbey and several other related Frisbey, Montgomery, Rutledge and Byram families moved settling in DeWitt, Mason and Sangamon Counties, Illinois. He moved his family to DeWitt County, Illinois in 1848 and died nine days after settling there. He had been on a business trip to New Orleans and was returning home on the boat when he fell, hit his head, and died from the injury. George had a large collection of Frisbey family data, which was stored in an old desk. After his death his wife Sarah Ann, who could not read, had the boys take the desk out and burn it, along with the family papers. 1830 Census Bloom, Twp., Morgan Co, OH. 1836 moved to Roxbury Twp, Washington Co, appears there in 1840 Census and on a polling list of 1847. There was a special sort of container for this purpose and on the journey mentioned, Mother (Melissa) carried it on horseback. Grandmother, Sarah Ann Frisby was determined that Melissa should have a nice figure and in order to give it to her, decreed that she should wear a very tightly laced corset day and night for several days at a time. This ordeal was survived repeatedly and apparently did no lasting harm as Mother (Melissa) lived to be almost eight-nine years old, and had thirteen children.” Melissa was 20 when she married A. C. Haldeman. They lived in Bloomington IL until moving to Independence, MO in 1868. Her father died when she was 19 and she met her husband to be, while living with Sarah Ann in DeWitt County. They married shortly after her father George Pack Frisbey died. That Sarah most certainly was having a hard time raising her large family by herself, is indicated by the fact that in 1850 census, Caris (Carey) Clay her 13 year old son was living with A.C. and Melissa and learning the Stonecutter, engraving business. Isaac Frisbey also learned the trade from A.C. This was only a short time after George P. died. Sarah married second William A. MONTGOMERY, who had been a neighbor of the Frisbey family in Ohio as well as Illinois. He is the same William Montgomery who witnessed the will of Jonathon Frisbey to his wife Sara (last name unknown). No marriage date is available yet. They lived in Clinton and DeWitt Counties, IL. She is listed in the party of about sixty Mormons who immigrated in 1867/9 to Independence, Missouri. The party included all of her children except Rose Ann about whom nothing more is known. (See Section on Christ Church) 1879 Sarah Ann Byrum Frisbey Montgomery, mother of Carey Clay Frisbey, died in Independence, Jackson Co, Missouri, but is buried in Hopewell Cemetery, Down Twp, McClean Co, Illinois. A closer look at Sarah Ann BYRAM Frisbey Montgomery Sarah Ann was born in 1810, probably Wood County, West Virginia (could have been Meigs OH) to William Byram and Ann Ball Gibson. Her mother died when Sarah Ann under 20 years old leaving Sarah Ann in the middle of her siblings ranging in age from 1 to 20 years old. The widowed father William; lived next door to a John William Byram and both families migrated to the Ohio side of the river near Meigs/Athens County. John William and his wife whose name was also Sarah, probably helped William raise his family. Some of the names of siblings were repeated in both families and census records became confused as to their parents names of William or John William. Land Records and Wills bears this out. “Children of John William Byram and wife Sarah according to his will are: my five sons and two daughters viz. David, Jeremiah, Andrew Jackson, Jacob, William Henry, Sarah and Eliza. The children of William and Ann Ball Gibson Byram are Adam, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Sarah Ann, William, Angeline, Susan and Charlotte. (Question) is Charlotte Ann Ball’s daughter, as this would put her death date up to 1823 and she would have been in her mid thirties. Other accounts put her at age 28 when she died. Research needed. Rebecca was the first to marry at age 17 in 1824 to Dougal Walker, Adam married at age 25, Delelah Collins in 1827, then wife #2, Sarah (Sally Hand,) in 1831; Sarah Ann married George Pack Frisbey in 1829 when she was 19 years old; Elizabeth married at age 25, Elijah Rood in 1830, Susan married age 20 in 1835, William Winchel; There were 3 marriages in 1837, William age 26, married Mercy Hand, (Sister of Adams wife Sarah) in 1837; Angeline also married in 1837 age 24 to Davis Moses; and Charlotte who married Peter Silas Rutledge at age 14. By 1837 Adam, William, Angeline and Charlotte were located in Vermilion Co. Indiana. Their father William Byram never remarried, but lived and moved closely with his children. Sarah Ann and George Pack stayed in Ohio living in Zanesville and Marietta. George was a ferryboat captain, moving people and cargo across the Ohio and later on down the Mississippi as far as New Orleans. Sarah was busy at home raising her large family. These were years of struggling to make ends meet and George was willing to try anything to earn a living for his large family. After 1837 when Charlotte married Peter Silas Rutledge, George and Peter and several neighbors went to California looking for Gold. On the way home their raft capsized and all their gold sunk to the bottom of the river and was never recovered. He returned home disappointed and went back to running the rivers. Land was available in Illinois and many of George’s Frisbey family, neighbors the Rutledge’s and friends William Montgomery, including Sarah’s father, William Byram, received land grants in DeWitt Co, IL. and made preparations to move their families. George made one last run down the Mississippi and on this trip received a head injury by a fall. He returned home, moved his family and died from his injuries within days of arriving in Illinois. This left Sarah Ann with 7 children still at home and one on the way. It must have been a real struggle for her to sustain this family and left little time for grieving. It is said, Sarah Ann couldn’t read and she had her children take a large desk and all the papers inside out in the yard and burn them. This left many unanswered questions to her descendants. Years after her death it probably prevented the heirs from receiving a large portion of the Joseph Ball Estate which included much of the waterfront land in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to receive their portion the family had to have documented proof of lineage. While they were easily tracked down by the lawyers, their proof of descendancy it was not adequate. Meanwhile, Sarah was left in a new location without means of support other than what family could spare and pregnant with her last child who was born 9 months after George Pack died. She married an old friend and neighbor William A. Montgomery after 1850. He disappears from her life by 1860 census, reason unknown. Melissa married Adna C. Haldeman at age 20. Leaving Sarah with one less mouth to feed, but also added to the responsibility of caring for her other children. In the 1850 census we find Melissa’s brother Carey Clay living in Springfield, IL, with Melissa where he was working as an apprentice to Adna in Marble stonecutting. There were five Children still at home with Sarah in 1850 census were George P. Age 16, Mary age 12, Isaac (Mills) age 5 and Rose Anna (sp. Rosannah Frisby) age 9. It is not known where Sarah and Clementine were at this time. The 1850 census shows a Clementine age 10 living with a Jenkins family in Pekin, Tazewell Co, IL. In June of 1852 daughter Sarah was married to Albert M. Montgomery in McLean Co, IL. The Haldeman and the Frisbey families were caught up in the religious movement of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Melissa’s husband and George Pack Frisbey II, became early church leaders in the break off church, which became known as Christ Church – Temple Lot. (See additional chapter on Christ Church – Temple lot). The 1870 census shows Sarah Montgomery living in Independence, MO. (Probably with or close to Melissa) She died in 1879 in MO but was buried in IL. Note: Some researchers/records indicate Sarah Ann married William Montgomery 1st I in Ohio, then George Pack Frisbey in Marietta Ohio, and William Montgomery again in 1849 in Illinois. I cannot find any proof of this assumption.
