As nearly as we can gain the particulars, Hupp in company with some half a dozen others, all more or less under the influence of liquor, went into Grandview Village, bragging of their willingness to do any amount of "whipping" could they but find "foemen worthy" of their -- rifle-whiskey. Charles Bradfield, Marion Rolls, a man named Griggs, another named Oliver, and perhaps one or two other -- all of whom had been "taking their Fourth" and probably their fifth or more -- "engaged" Hupp's gang. A general drunken fight followed. Griggs knocked Hupp down with his fist, and as he was recovering himself, Rolls and Bradfield came up, and one of them struck him over the head with a stave, and the other across the back with a club. Hupp fell senseless and died within a few hours. He was about 45 years of age, and had the reputation of being an "old fighter". Griggs and Oliver gave themselves up to the Justice of the Peace, and after a long examination, the latter was dismissed, as it could not be shown that he had touched Hupp. Griggs was bound over to Court in the sum of $200. Rolls and Bradfield escaped, and at this writing we have not heard of their arrest. Additional Comments: For informational purposes only. No further information on this family.
