All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/oh/ohfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Leslyn Lang 1mercury@cox.net March 24, 2008, 6:31 pm Source: Court Of Common Pleas, Marietta, Oh Written: December 16, 1861 Will book 1, p. 384, administrators & executor's docket book D, p. 189, Warren Township John Reading's Will In the name of the benevolent father of all I John Reading of Washington County, Warren Township and State of Ohio, do make and publish this my Last Will and Testament: Item 1st: I give and devise to my beloved wife in lieu of her dower the farm in which we now reside situate in Warren Township, Washington County, and State of Ohio containing about eighty acres during her natural lifetime except twenty acres which I have deeded to my son Simon John Reading as his legacy in my estate and said Simon John Reading is to pay to my beloved wife $300 in fifty-dollar installments. And all the stock, household goods, furniture provisions and other goods and chattels which may be thereon at the time of my decease during her natural life as aforesaid she however setting so much thereof as may be sufficient to pay my just debts or for her support while she lives. At the death of my said wife, the real and personal estate aforesaid that my remain at her decease I give and devise to my children except Simon John Reading to wit Martha Reading, Lidy Reading, Thos Reading, Sarah Reading, James N. Reading, Francis Reading, Nancy C. Reading and their heirs. If however any of the above named hiers should Dy & before the decease of my said wife leaving no hiers then said estate to be divided among them that survive. If my said wife should not survive me then I devise and bequeath the said property to the above hiers except Simon John Reading: Item 2nd: I do hereby nominate and appoint my beloved wife Guardian of my sons Thomas Reading and James N. Reading and also Guardian of my 3 daughters Sarah, Nancy, and Francis Reading until the said Thomas, James N. and Sarah, Francis and Nancy Reading arrive at the age of 21 years or intermarrys. Item 3rd: I hereby nominate and appoint Catherine Reading my beloved wife Executrix of this my last will and testament. I desire that no appraisement or sale of personal property be made and that the Court of Probate direct the omission of the same in persuance of the statute. I do hereby revoke all former wills by me made. In testimony hereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 16th day of December in the year of our lord, one thousand eight hundred sixty one. Johnson Jason Huggins Additional Comments: John Reading came from Wales (not England). He was born in 1807. His first wife was Margaret Thomas. The children: Simon John, Martha, Lydia and Thomas are from this wife. They were married by banns March 13, 1837 at Llangynidr, Breconshire, Wales. He left his father also named John Reading and 1 sister named Francis Reading in Wales. In 1842 they traveled to Baltimore on the Bark Henry Shelton. From there they lived in Allegheny Co., PA. Margaret must have died there. Grave not located yet. He met and married Catherine Tunnicliff(e). Catherine survived John Reading and later married William Greenway. Simon John Reading died in 1862 at Shiloh, TN. He is buried in a common war grave without a tombstone. The Reading family suffered a great loss of children in a very short span of time. John Reading and other family members are buried in Bethel Cemetery, Warren Twp., Washington Co., OH. According to British birth certificates of his children, John Reading was a collier (coal miner) in Wales.
