Shortly after 1830, until 1870, worship services were held in "Kopps" Church by both Lutherans and German Reformed. This church was located about one and one-half miles south of the present church, where Kopps's Cemetery still stands. The Rev. Andrew Kuhn was the first regularly called Lutheran pastor. The two church groups held services on alternate Sundays but each worshiped in the same manner. When the Reformed moved to Canaan the Lutherans acquired the current site about 1868, purchasing it from Bethel English Lutheran Congregation..the corner-stone for the church was laid on May 7, 1869. The Congregation was part of a parish with Salem Lutheran Church of Madisonburg. The parsonage was in Canaan. During the pastorate of the Rev.. Charles Hammeric (1893-1900), the parsonage burned. A second parsonage during the pastorate of the Rev. J. H. Busche (1913-1918) also burned. Many church records were lost in these fires. A new parsonage was built in Madisonburg.. In 1957 the Constitution was revised and the congregation was incorporated. A tract of five acres of land was purchased from Mr. & Mrs. Harry Wilson. Ground was broken on Christmas Day and a new parsonage was dedicated in April 1958. On February 1, 1958, parish relations with the Salem were dissolved and the Rev. William Fritz accepted the call to Canaan. The present church, a short distance from the old site, was built and dedicated in 1964. The corner stone included the dates of 1869, the date of the original church and 1964 for the present building. Eight years after the dedication the $50,000 mortgage was burned. It is presently a congregation of 278 baptized and 182 confirmed members. Pastors since 1900 have been: Albert Beck, J.P. Moser, J.H. Busche, Burr Drumm, W. A. Klindworth, Richard Gronewold, W.C. Bockelman, George Stobel, William F. FRitz, Glenn S. Miller, Gerald Pierson, Clarence Beireis, James Budke, and William Geiger File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/oh/wayne/churches/canaanev36nbb.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/ohfiles/ File size: 2.7 Kb
