Montpelier, Ohio September 20, 1906
  Mr. Editor - I was passing through your town and met ther an old comrade of the
civil war.  We did not recognize each other, when someone called his name I stood
and looked at the old man and said to myself, "Is it possible that the old
lieutenant still lives?"  I went up to him on his crutch and asked hi if he
remembered me.  After a good loo at me he said I was a Co. F man without a name. 
Now that man put me on guard uty many times.  I will say he was always good to the
en under him, never mean like many others.  Shrewd and brave to a fault.  In the
last three  years of the war I was many times on scout duty under hm and he never
asked a man to go where he did not lead.  If he is a good a citizen as he was a
soldier you may be proud of him  I never knew of his getting drunk in the service. 
He was ever thoughtful of those und him.  I thought he was so different from so many
of the officers in the regiment.  I was sorry to see him so crippled.  After seeing
the old corad I thought he looked as though he was nearing his tent whose door opens
inward but never outwrd.  We are all getting old.  Soon will come the muster out. In
looking over this letter I noticed that I have not given the name of the man I have
been writing about.  He is Lieutenant Simon Waterston.  The boys named me "Corporal
John"

Additional Comments:
Simon Waterston enlisted in the 38th O.V.I. (Ohio Voluntary Infantry) on September
1, 1861 and mustered out on Nov. 1, 1863. He mustered out in Cattanooga, Tennessee. 
He was also a member of the G.A.R. No. 155, Montpelier, Ohio.
