Perrysburg Journal, Perrysburg, Wood County, Ohio. Feb. 16, 1895. Page 5. February 16, 1895 On Wednesday afternoon about 3 o'clock, the alarm of fire was sounded, which brought out the fire department and many citizens to assist in extinguishing a blaze that for a short time threatened to destroy the elegant residence of Mrs. H. C. Lawrence. The meter had frozen and a lantern had been placed hear it to thaw out the pipes. Thos. Roether was working at the pipes and the escaping gas communicating with the lighted lantern, caused a blaze which for a time threatened to destroy the building. The timely arrival of the department and the cool head of Mr. Roether in cutting off the gas supply, enabled the fire to be extinguished before any damage of consequence was done. After the firemen had left and all danger was supposed to be over, C.A. Powers and Capt. Whetmore investigated and found that the fire in the joist underneath the porch had not been entirely extinguished and would have caused another fire. They crawled under the buiding [sic] and extinguished the burning embers.
