Perrysburg Journal. Perrysburg, Wood County, Ohio. Mar 15, 1901. Page 1. March 15, 1901 Two loud explosions at the hour of 2 a.m. on Saturday last, caused people living in the vicinity of the citizens bank of Perrysburg, to think that the treasure stored in the safety vaults of the bank was being sought by burglars. Two explosions were heard. This brought George and Sam Reither out of their restaurant, to learn the cause. A shot from a revolver, caused them to return to the house and turn in a telephone alarm. Fred Hillabrand's family were awakened and as Fred and Robert were looking out of a window, they discovered five men coming out of the alley leading from the bank. Shortly after this, investigation showed the notion store of R. Danz, which adjoins the bank and is separated by a brick wall, had been entered and efforts made to make a hole through the wall, into the bank by the use of explosives, but the efforts resulted only in making a small hole in the brick wall, breaking considerable glass in the store room and scattering brick dust and plaster all over the stock of goods. The burglars then dropped the job and departed after taking several dollars in pennies from Mr. Danz' cash drawer, which they pried open. Three men, Henry Keller, George Taylor and Doll Butler were arrested on the supposition that they were three of the party who were seen coming from the bank. They were given a preliminary examination before Mayor Roach the first of the week, and each bound over to court under $300 bond. This is the fifth attack on the Exchange bank, which is one of the best protected banks in the country, having the latest improved fire and burglar proof, time lock safe, with an inner burglar proof treasure box. The vault is fire proof, and its connection with a system of burglar alarms makes it impossible for anyone to enter the vault without being discovered before it would be possible to gain an entrance to the safe by any means adopted by cracksmen. Besides this precaution, the bank is insured with the Bankers Mutual Casualty Co., against all losses, and only two weeks prior to this attack an additional $2000 was added to the insurance making $10,000 in all.
