Perrysburg, Wood County, Ohio. Sep 21, 1864, p. 3. Obituary. It is with feelings of sorry, we announce the demise of that worthy man, and faithful public servant, Sylvanus Hatch, Recorder of Wood County. From the exalted character he has maintained in all the relations of life, and from the general esteem in which he has been held by all who knew him, a brief memoir may not be improper. Sylvanus Hatch was born at Falmouth, Mass., March 17, 1794, and died of Apoplexy, at his residence in Perrysburg, on Monday the 19th inst. In early life he enjoyed the advantages of a sound Academical education, which fitted him in after life for the competent discharge of all the business transactions in which he has engaged. - His trade was that of tanner and currier, on the acquirement of which, he settled in Beaufort, S.C., where for 18 years he carried an extensive business. His residence at the South was fraught with unpleasant association, and having incurred great pecuniary losses, he determined to remove to a State in which Freedom was untrammelled, and where a Republican form of Government existed. He settled in Plain township, Wood county. Possessing the confidence of his fellow citizens of that township, he was selected by them to fill several local offices. In the month of June, 1836, he removed to Perrysburg, to fill the office of County Recorder, to which office he has been thrice elected: In all the duties of life, both private and public, he has displayed the highest qualities of the citizen, the patriot and the Christian. He embodied the simplicity, and tender-heartedness of a child, with the mature judgement and inflexible resolution of the man. Regardless of consequences, he was ever at his post, to serve his friends, his country and his God. His acts of goodness were performed without ostentation. It would perhaps be difficult to find a man farther removed from hypocricy and deceit. As a member of the Christian Church, he was a lover of the truth, and of peace. In his office of Deacon, he revealed important service to the Presbyterian Church, with which by choice he was associated, yet his catholicity of spirit extended to Christians of all denominations, to whom he manifested a sincere attachment, and aided in promoting their prosperity. Possessed by a firm and unshaken faith in the merits of our Divine Redeemer, and inspired by that blessed hope of immortality and eternal life, he has passed the portals of the grave, and the blossoms of a life on earth, have matured the perfect fruit of the heavenly state. "The chamber where the good man meets his fate, Is privileg'd beyond the common walk Of virtuous life, quite the verge of heaven." c.
