Perrysburg, Wood County, Ohio. Jan 4, 1865, p. 3. Died. At Charleston, S.C., of Yellow Fever, Lieut. Ara C. Spafford, 21st O.V.V.I., in the 28th year of his age. Lieut. Spafford early enlisted to fight the battles of freedom, and had by his good conduct, won for himself the position which he held at the time of his death. AT the battle of Murfreesboro he was wounded in the wrist and neck by the same ball. In September, 1863, he as captured and sent to Libby prison. While in the Libby, his wants could be supplied by friends at home, but after Grants advance in the spring, he, with the other prisoners was sent to Columbia, Georgia. From this prison he escaped, but while swimming a river, on his way to the lines of his friends, he was recaptured and taken back. What his history was during the long months of imprisonment, there is little data for determining, but undoubtedly it was not different from that of others who have been starved and frozen into the grave by those who profess to have all the chivalry of the American nation! God save us from such chivalry! The particulars of his death have not yet reached his friends; they only know he died, and was buried at Charleston. The fond hopes which were indulged by an anxious mother and waiting wife, of a speedy return, have been dashed to the ground, and weeping and anguish are in the houses which would have been filled with joy on his return. What to them can fill the place of a kind and affectionate son, a generous and confiding husband? Who shall minister to the mother's lone heart, or care for little ones and their mother? May God have them in his safe keeping, sustain in sorry, and save from earthly want.
